Ausberry suffered a season-ending shoulder injury last year in training camp, opening the door for Mychal Rivera to become the top tight end. Rivera enters this season as the starter and is expected to be a bigger part of the passing game, but Ausberry could push him for targets. Ausberry was the backup to Brandon Myers in 2012 and caught just seven passes on 12 targets. But he's bigger than Rivera at 6-4, 258, and has better speed.
The departure of Brandon Myers in the offseason has created a large void in the passing game, one which the tight end position as a whole doesn't figure to fill this season. Ausberry caught just seven passes (on 12 targets) for 92 yards last season, and the other tight end atop the depth chart, Richard Gordon, caught just two passes for nine yards. The Raiders drafted two tight ends late in the draft (Nick Kasa and Mychal Rivera), and while Ausberry was reportedly seeing a lot of action during minicamp, but it remains to be seen who will emerge as the top option in training camp.
Ausberry will serve as a back-up tight end in 2012; however, the Raiders will be inexperienced at the tight end position, and Ausberry is likely the top pass catcher of the group, so he will have a chance to earn some playing time.
