October 29, 2020
The Chargers placed Green (ankle) on injured reserve Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Green will now officially have to miss at least three games while working to recover from his ankle injury. While the veteran is absent, Stephen Anderson and Donald Parham could see slight bumps in usage behind top tight end Hunter Henry.

There's not much else to say about Green at this point in his career. He's an extreme blocking specialist with just 28 receptions over the past two seasons with the Chargers and last season he saw his fewest offensive snaps since 2015. The veteran tight end is used in such a different capacity compared to Hunter Henry that even were the younger starter to miss any time, it doesn't guarantee Green would see that many additional looks.
Despite the Chargers' loss of Hunter Henry to an ACL tear in the preseason, Green never materialized as a fantasy factor in 2018, as veteran Antonio Gates returned to post a 28-333-2 stat line for the team. For his part, Green hauled in 19 passes for 210 yards and a TD. Despite out-snapping Gates 673 to 366, Green ended up making most of his impact as a blocker. It's an assignment he'll reprise in 2019 behind a now-healthy Henry.
Rarely used as a receiving threat during his seven-year stint with the Broncos, Green may be forced into the role after top tight end Hunter Henry tore his ACL during OTAs. Lauded as a capable blocker, Green should see the majority of the snaps at the position provided the depth chart remains the same, but it's unclear if an offense that liked to utilize two tight-end sets in 2017 will pivot away from the formation with Henry on the mend. The Chargers did re-sign Antonio Gates shortly before Week 1, potentially setting up a timeshare with the 38-year-old getting most of the snaps on passing downs.
Green's lackluster production continued in 2016, as he finished with just 22 receptions for 237 yards and a score over 12 games despite being listed atop the depth chart at the tight end spot. Seeking more of a receiving threat at the position, the Broncos drafted Michigan product Jake Butt (knee) in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft, and he could battle Green for the No. 1 spot at TE when healthy. Either way, Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders figure to be target monsters, and the tight ends will play a secondary role.
Green is looking to finally emerge as a legitimate receiving threat after recording just 35 catches in five years, during which he has primarily been used as a blocker. He recorded career highs in catches, 12, and yards, 173, in his first season under head coach Gary Kubiak and is battling 2015 third-rounder Jeff Heuerman for the starting job in 2016. Even a hobbled Owen Daniels was able to nab 46 catches as the starting tight end for last year's anemic Denver passing offense, so Green should be - at worst - a solid but unspectacular option if he wins the job.
Green has been primarily used as a blocking tight end during his four years in Denver, never catching more than nine passes in a season, and he scored his first career touchdown in Week 17 last year. Even with Julius Thomas now in Jacksonville, Green’s true value is as a blocker, and he’s unlikely to get a significant bump in targets, particularly with Owen Daniels atop the depth chart.
Green is mostly a blocking tight end, so despite getting a few starts last year when Julius Thomas was injured, he's a fairly limited fantasy performer. If Joel Dreessen and Jacob Tamme both stick around, Green's fantasy ceiling will remain low.
Green has been a promising prospect for a few years but he hasn't ever done enough to get himself even in contention for a starting job. With Jacob Tamme and Joel Dreessen back for another year, Green's fantasy value remains very low.
Will miss the first four games of the season due to suspension, although he isn't likely to pass Jacob Tamme or Joel Dreessen on the depth chart.
Green joins an already crowded tight end depth chart, but he was such a good receiver in college, that the new coaching staff may try to get him involved somehow.
