After spending the majority of his young career as a rarely-seen wide receiver, Maehl will either be signed to the practice squad or cut this season.
Maehl, a former college star for Chip Kelly at Oregon, has a chance to stick as the fifth or sixth receiver in 2014. He has a better special teams background than some of his competition.
With the Eagles' taxed by injuries, they traded for Maehl, who they clearly feel is worth a flyer, given that he worked under coach Chip Kelly while he was played college ball for Oregon.
Maehl adds depth to the Texans' receiving options, but will likely make his biggest impact on special teams.
Maehl was one of the first moves the Texans made after the owners and players agreed to a new collective bargaining agreement. He showed an ability to get open and catch balls during his time at Oregon, and excelled in his senior year with 77 catches and 12 touchdowns. Maehl competed with several others for two available spots, but was released in the final cut, and later re-signed to Houston's practice squad.
