After Chris Conte (concussion) exited early in Sunday's contest, McCray saw the bulk of the snaps at free safety the rest of the way, finishing with four stops.

ANALYSIS
Though Conte is a superior talent at safety, he's been snake-bitten on the injury front this season, battling shoulder issues and his second concussion in less than two months. This setback could force him out of the Week 6 contest against the Falcons and possibly even longer, opening the door for McCray to step into a starting role. While he doesn't figure to create many turnovers when he sees the field, McCray has shown an ability to make tackles, despite his somewhat spotty playing time this season. He has 19 tackles over the Bears' first five games.

McCray, a depth safety and special teams ace, returns to the Cowboys after one season in Chicago, but he's unlikely to see much action on defense

With the Bears staging an open competition for both of their safety jobs in training camp, McCray will have the opportunity to audition for a starting role. He seems unlikely to land one of the gigs after playing exclusively as a backup last season with the Cowboys, but his experience on special teams should at least help his chances of claiming a spot on the 53-man roster out of camp.

Special teams ace saw more work than expected in the base defense last year due to injuries in the secondary, and wound up with 71 tackles in 15 games and 10 starts. Expect him to return to a bench role in 2013.
