Williams signed with the Raiders back in March after playing his first five NFL seasons for the Cardinals. The 28-year lost significant snaps in Arizona behind an experienced defensive line, and it's highly likely that he'll see a higher volume of snaps in Oakland. Williams recorded 32 tackles (21 solo) and one sack in 2014 and he'll have a good opportunity to build upon that in 2015.
Williams shoulders the burden placed upon the nose tackle in the Cardinals' 3-4 scheme, but after Darnell Dockett torn his ACL during training camp, the former will garner some snaps at defensive end going forward. While he's averaged 31.3 tackles in 13.5 games per year during four professional seasons, Williams has contributed little else on the stat sheet (one fumble recovery and one interception). As such, he holds little relevance in IDP leagues.
Williams will start at nose tackle in 2012, but has not lived up to his potential as of yet.
Williams began his 2011 training camp on a sour note as he reported out of shape and overweight. Williams performed like a rookie in 2010; he showed flashes of talent that warranted first-round consideration, but his 38 tackles won't cut it heading into 2011. Williams is expected to be the anchor of the Cards' 3-4 at nose tackle. Until he demonstrates consistency (and the ability to stay on the field with regards to his weight concerns), he won't enter Week 1 as a legitimate IDP option.
Gabe Watson was the only nose tackle on the roster prior to the Cards' decision to draft Williams -- the 11th player on their board -- in the first round of the NFL Draft. He'll be given an opportunity to immediately start between defensive ends Darnell Dockett and Calais Campbell as a rookie. Perhaps having Chester McGlockton as a mentor during his senior season at Tennessee will also ease Williams' transition to life in the NFL. Ultimately, the IDP value he brings will be manifested in his ability to keep the interior linemen busy while enabling Dockett and Campbell to rush the passer.
