Because new coach John Fox maintains it will be an open competition, Clausen is technically in contention for the starting job. But looking at the salary and talent level of both players, this seems more like a strategic move to motivate and maximize the potential of Jay Cutler. There's a reason Clausen hadn't started a game since 2010 prior to being inserted into the lineup in favor of Cutler in Week 16; the former second-round pick has yet to pass for even 200 yards in a game and failed to throw a single touchdown in seven of his 11 NFL starts. Clausen is a career 52.7-percent passer for 5.13 YPA and a 5:10 TD:INT ratio. That said, the 27-year-old nearly led the Bears to an upset victory over the heavily favored Lions in his lone start last season. If he does start this season, he'll at least have plenty of help on a team that's loaded at the skill positions. Fox might turn to Clausen if the struggles continue for Cutler, who likely will have a much shorter leash than in years past.
Though he hasn't taken an NFL snap since his rookie season of 2010, Clausen impressed the coaching staff during the Bears' June minicamp and was signed to a contract. He sustained his success in training camp, ultimately beating out Jordan Palmer for the top backup job behind Jay Cutler. Considering the occasional fragility Cutler has shown during his tenure in Chicago, it wouldn't be a surprise if Clausen saw some extended game action at some point this season.
Competed with Derek Anderson to be Cam Newton's backup this season before being cut.
Has no shot at a starting job and will compete with Derek Anderson for the backup role behind Cam Newton.
Clausen was quite bad as a rookie, and, frankly, didn’t give any reason for optimism. He has a good shot of heading into autumn as Carolina’s default starter, however, because Cam Newton figures to be very raw coming out of Auburn. Still, it’s tough to see the Panthers enduring 16 more games of what Clausen had to offer a year ago, so he either needs to improve a great deal or get ready to see the bench a couple months into the year. The Panthers also brought in veteran Derek Anderson, but it would be tough to see a situation where Clausen struggles and the team goes to Anderson instead of Newton.
Carolina's first pick in the 2010 draft, Clausen is a potential steal as the Panthers were able to land him in the second round. He is widely considered to be one of the most NFL-ready quarterbacks, having studied under Charlie Weis' offense at Notre Dame, which is similar to the offense used in Carolina. However, he has been criticized for a lack of leadership and for not having a strong work ethic in the film room. Criticism aside, he is definitely considered the QB of the future for Carolina, and could be handed the starting job this season if Matt Moore struggles early.
