McGee was released by Houston in August. He was a little-used third-string quarterback for Dallas the past three seasons before signing with the Texans in the off-season.
Third-string QB isn't likely to see action with Kyle Orton now in Dallas to back up Tony Romo. Now in the last year of his contract, McGee may not get the chance to show enough improvement to stick around.
McGee didn't wow anybody when he took over from Jon Kitna at the end of 2010, but he showed enough to stick around as the Cowboys' #3 QB. He doesn't have a huge arm, but he's mobile and could be a solid field general with more maturity.
Third-string QB will get another year to develop before the Cowboys need him to be NFL-ready, assuming Tony Romo and Jon Kitna stay healthy.
The rookie QB will be asked to watch and learn this season, unless disaster befalls the Cowboys.
