Martin signed a one-year contract with the Bears on Tuesday, Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Martin, who was cut by the Bears in training camp, re-signed with the team after Antrel Rolle suffered a foot injury in Sunday's win over the Raiders, putting his status in question for the Week 5 game against the Chiefs. If Rolle is unavailable for that contest, Martin or backup Harold Jones-Quartey could see the start at strong safety.

Martin likely enters training camp as the Bears’ fifth safety, a spot on the depth chart that could result in him being let go during final cutdowns. On a more fortunate note, Martin will have the benefit of reuniting with John Fox, who spent a second-round draft pick on the safety when he coached the Panthers in 2009. As a reserve with the Jaguars last season, Martin appeared in 13 games and made 16 tackles and one interception. He’s unlikely to provide much more production than that if he’s able to win a 53-man roster spot with the Bears.
.
Will start at free safety, although he doesn't have a history of putting up big IDP numbers from that position.
Like his teammate and fellow starting safety Charles Godfrey, Martin is a former corner who runs better than most safeties. As is often the case with defenders on bad defenses, especially bad defenses compounded by bad offenses, Martin could pile up a lot of tackles in what figures to be a weak unit that gets left on the field for long periods. He finished with 85 tackles (59 solo) in 15 starts last year, so it wouldn’t be shocking if Martin made a push for triple-digits in 2011.
Martin enters the 2010 season with raised expectations after playing very well in relief last year. His speed is excellent, but he will need to show that he can take care of the mental aspects of his game, such as reading coverages. Unless he flops in training camp, Martin should enter the season starting at strong safety.
Martin, one of the Panthers' two second-round picks, may need some polish after playing his collegiate career at Troy. As a rookie, he should get a chance to handle the nickle back role, while Martin figures to be the next in line behind Richard Marshall for a starting cornerback spot.
