Retires midway through Week 2 loss

September 16, 2018
Davis didn't join the Bills on the field for the second half of Sunday's loss to the Chargers after apparently revealing his intention to retire from professional football, Mike Rodak of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
In a surprising decision, Davis reportedly told teammates and the coaching staff in the locker room during the intermission that he had no desire to continue his 10-year career, resulting in the Bills finishing the contest with only three healthy cornerbacks. Davis currently remains on the 53-man roster, but it's expected that he'll either be released or formally file for retirement in the coming days to open up a spot for the Bills to add another player. If this is indeed the end for Davis, he'll walk away from the NFL with 22 career interceptions over 121 games with Miami, Indianapolis and Buffalo.

Coming off of season-ending surgery on his groin last season, Davis will look to bolster the Bills' secondary after six seasons with the Colts. The 30-year-old is an excellent talent -- he has 0.92 pass breakups per game the last four seasons -- and has his starting job secured. Injuries are the biggest question mark with Davis, however, so proceed with caution.
Davis has been one of the top coverage corners in the NFL over the course of his eight-year career and he'll look to continue that trend in 2017. A groin injury cost him two games in 2016 and may have contributed to his career low 37 tackles and one interception. Now healthy, Davis figures to be the team's top cornerback once again and put together another strong season.
Last season, Davis tied a career-high with four interceptions to go along with 48 tackles, his highest total since 2012. Year-in and year-out, Davis has been regarded as one of best coverage defenders in the league and he'll look to continue the trend in 2016. The eight-year veteran underwent minor foot surgery in the offseason, but appears to be on track for a healthy return during training camp.
Davis is a starting cornerback and perhaps the key member of Indy's defense. He had just four interceptions last season, but continues to grade as one of the NFL's best defenders in coverage.
Davis was a fixture in the Colts' secondary in 2013, accumulating 46 combined tackles and one interception, while tying a career-best number of 12 passes defended. Keeping Davis was the Colts' top priority in free agency and he signed a four-year, $39 million contract. Davis is Indy's top cover corner and his health may be a key to the team's playoff chances amid a thin secondary.
Davis had a poor first half of the season that made Indy's trade for him for a second-round draft pick look like a bust as he struggled with ankle and knee injuries. However, he played much better at the end of the regular season and the playoffs, with three interceptions in his last two games. He was named the AFC defensive player of the week for Week 17. He'll start at cornerback and Indianapolis is counting on him to be a shut-down corner.
Davis is once again slotted to start at CB for Miami this season. He is a solid cover guy but doesn't make enough big plays to be considered one of the best in the game.
Davis is in the third year of a five-year contract and will once again man the left cornerback position for Miami. Davis may not have the hype of Darrelle Revis or Nnamdi Asomugha, but is a solid corner in his own right. Unfortunately a lack of interceptions prevents Davis from being a solid IDP pick.
Davis is expected to be one of the starting cornerbacks for the Dolphins in his second season. His rookie season was solid but not spectacular, and if he were to struggle this season he could be replaced by Will Allen.
Will battle Sean Green and Eric Green for the starting Right Cornerback job with Miami.
