After a solid 2013 campaign, Hayes projects to start at outside linebacker.
As a member of the Bears last season, Hayes recorded 16 tackles in 15 games. Despite his unproductive 2012 season, there is a chance he'll start at outside linebacker this season.
Hayes figures to slide into the starting strong side linebacker spot, but will have to hold off Nick Roach to do so. If he can, he should have no problem matching his 2011 numbers. Otherwise he will be used as an experienced backup.
Hayes is probably a better real life linebacker than a fantasy one, as a relatively large portion of his otherwise modest tackle production gets made behind the line of scrimmage. Despite finishing 2010 with an unremarkable total of 82 tackles (72 solo), Hayes deserves credit for making 15.5 of those tackles behind the line of scrimmage. He had 14 tackles for loss in 2009, as well. If your league makes note of the stat, Hayes is someone to move up on the list.
A little-used reserve as a rookie, Hayes was handed more responsibility when the Bucs waived veterans Derrick Brooks and Cato June. Hayes responded with an impressive 98 tackles, three sacks, two interceptions and six passes defensed in 15 games before a shoulder injury ended his season. He should be healthy for the start of training camp, and is a good candidate to build on last season’s success.
With the release of linebackers Derrick Brooks and Cato June, Hayes could see an increased role with the Buccaneers in 2009 besides just special teams duty. The team likes the young LB but he may still end up being a reserve for at least one more year.
Sixth-round draft pick, will compete for reserve linebacker role in camp.
