McDonald was indicted by a Santa Clara, CA grand jury Wednesday, the San Jose Mercury News reports.

ANALYSIS
The indictment includes one count of rape stemming from a party at McDonald's house in December, resulting in his arrest Wednesday and subsequent release after he posted $100,000 bail. The 30-year-old faces up to eight years in prison upon a conviction, which compounded with his run of behavior over the last year -- he was arrested for suspicion of felony domestic assault last August, but charges were dropped; in May, he was arrested twice in the span of three days on suspicion of domestic violence and child endangerment, which was followed by a violation of a restraining order -- very likely signals an end to his football career.

McDonald matched his career-high with 29 tackles in 2013 and will look to build on that number after undergoing successful shoulder surgery this off-season. He is in line to start at defensive end for the 49ers opposite Justin Smith.

McDonald has started at defensive end for all but one of the 49ers games over the last three seasons and is expected to fill a similar role this year again. With so much attention being paid to the likes of Aldon and Justin Smith and NoVarro Bowman, McDonald has been able to find his way in for a handful of sacks but is not considered much of a threat in IDP leagues.

McDonald is likely to start at left defensive tackle.

McDonald will likely be limited to third down and nickel pass rush situations, although he did record three sacks in that role during the 2009 season.

McDonald's status for 2009 remains uncertain (knee) and he may end up being placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

McDonald is expected to challenge for a starting position on the 49ers' defensive line.

McDonald's draft stock plummeted because of a problem with his knees. He had two knee surgeries in 2005 but started all 14 games last season. McDonald's knees still may need surgery but the 49ers felt he was too good a value to pass up in the third round and he is expected to see time at defensive end and nose tackle.
