ANALYSIS
Stanton was elevated to the Buccaneers' active roster for Sunday's Super Bowl against the Chiefs, and he unsurprisingly failed to take a snap.

Stanton, a 35-year-old veteran quarterback, spent most of his 2018 campaign as Cleveland's third-stringer, where he failed to see any game action. He's currently listed as the backup to Baker Mayfield on the Browns depth chart, but that could change with another quarterback addition. The last time Stanton saw meaningful action was in 2017 with the Cardinals, when he completed 49.7 percent of his passes with a 6:5 TD:INT ratio across five games (159 attempts).
Stanton joins the Browns after spending the last four seasons with the Cardinals. A 2007 second-round pick, Stanton has seen action in just 38 NFL games -- five of which came in 2017 -- during his career, throwing for 20 touchdowns and 24 interceptions. He'll likely compete with undrafted rookie Brogan Roback for third-string duties behind Tyrod Taylor and Baker Mayfield.
During his four-year stint with the Cardinals, Stanton has received sporadic duty under center, starting in nine of his 21 appearances. When Carson Palmer took Week 5 off last season due to a concussion, Stanton delivered a much-needed victory versus the 49ers, yet his line (11-of-28 passing for 124 yards and two touchdowns) left much to be desired. With Palmer entering his age-38 season, Stanton would again be called upon in the event of injury, but the 33-year-old is nothing more than a game manager at this point in his career. If there's any upside, it's due to the presence of a solid supporting cast led by RB David Johnson and WR Larry Fitzgerald, with speedy receivers John Brown and J.J. Nelson keeping defenses honest.
After playing in nine games for the Cardinals in 2014 due to a variety of injuries befalling Carson Palmer, Stanton returned to his typical reserve role last season, seeing garbage time on seven occasions. If the 36-year-old Palmer remains healthy the entire year, Stanton won't be a consideration aside from the deepest of dynasty leagues. Another absence from Palmer would push Stanton into regular duty, but owners will need to be in dire need of a QB to tap the nine-year vet.
Stanton proved a capable understudy when pressed into action for the injured Carson Palmer last season, going 5-3 in eight starts before being sidelined with a knee injury of his own (MCL sprain) in Week 15. However, he completed just 55.0 percent of his passes for the year and posted a 2:3 TD:INT ratio over his final four games. Stanton is an adequate fill-in but will likely never be anything more than a backup. The 6-6 Logan Thomas, whom coach Bruce Arians said will "get a ton of reps" in OTAs and training camp, could supplant Stanton as the No. 2 because of his long-term upside. Given Palmer's age and injury history, there is a good chance whoever wins that job will eventually be needed, making this perhaps the most important offseason of Stanton's career.
In the second season of a three-year deal, Stanton nonetheless took a back seat to starting quarterback Carson Palmer in 2013, taking no snaps for the entirety of the campaign. Moreover, Stanton hasn't thrown a pass since 2010, when he started three consecutive games for the Lions among six appearances. Despite the presence of Ryan Lindley and this year's fourth-round pick Logan Thomas, Stanton is the Cardinals' clear-cut No. 2 under center.
Stanton will be the backup to Andrew Luck, giving the rookie a veteran presence behind him. It's hard to see Stanton getting any playing time barring a Luck injury.
Stanton returns to Detroit on a one-year contract to reprise his role as the team's No. 3 quarterback behind Matthew Stafford and Shaun Hill. With Stafford's injury history, it wouldn't be surprising to see Stanton move up the depth chart, but he likely won't see much time unless both Stafford and Hill go down with injuries.
Stanton will be the Lions' third quarterback, though his roster spot will always be in jeopardy should another, more experienced veteran quarterback on the waiver wire catch their eye.
Stanton, Detroit's 2007 second-round pick, has yet to be given a real chance to show what he can do as a professional. There was talk early in the offseason that Detroit would bring in a veteran to compete with Stanton for the third-string QB job, but it now appears that Stanton's roster spot is secured. The former Michigan State star won't see the feild unless injuries strike both Matthew Stafford and Daunte Culpepper, in which case Detroit would probably look for a veteran option via trade or free agency.
Stanton is the future at quarterback for the Lions, but that future appears to be at least a year or two off. He will have to battle Dan Orlovsky to be Jon Kitna's primary backup this year.
The Lions took Drew Stanton with their first of three second-round picks in April's draft. He enters training camp third on the depth chart behind Jon Kitna and Dan Orlovsky. They likely view him as the future once Kitna is gone, but he will only make an impact this year if there are injuries.

Potential Brady backup

March 27, 2020
The Buccaneers could consider signing Stanton to back up Tom Brady, Greg Auman of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Stanton, whose 2019 campaign was derailed by a knee injury, hasn't played in a regular-season game since 2017. Assuming Stanton has moved past his knee woes, however, the 35-year-old could be a good fit with the Bucs, considering that he played four years under Tampa Bay coach Bruce Arians while the two were both with the Cardinals. Brady and Ryan Griffin are the only two QBs currently on the Buccaneers' roster.
