Pool was released by the Cowboys on Monday, ESPN.com reports.

ANALYSIS
Pool had been taking snaps with the first-team defense in offseason workouts, but then failed his conditioning test at the start of camp. He did pass the test last Wednesday, but the Cowboys have apparently seen enough and will instead look to either Barry Church or Matt Johnson to start at safety next to Gerald Sensabaugh.

Free agent safety joins the Cowboys as a veteran security blanket who's familiar with coordinator Rob Ryan's defense. He could end up starting, but don't look for big IDP numbers from him.

Pool will compete with Eric Smith for the starting safety job alongside Jim Leonhard.

Pool will hold down a starting safety spot in the Browns' new 3-4 scheme which will likely create a larger role for him. The problem is, he has had some trouble adapting to the new system and the Browns may be looking to bring in a smarter, more capable candidate to fill the position. He has also been known to pick up an injury or two throughout the course of the season, not boding well for Pool's case as an IDP candidate.

Pool will compete for a starting spot on the team's roster. The safety has a ton of potential and could very well earn the No. 1 position.

Pool, the 34th overall pick in the 2005 draft, should play a big role in the Browns' secondary. Many scouts had him ranked as the No. 1 safety and he probably would have been a first-round draft pick in 2006, rather than a second-round pick in 2005, had he not left college one year early.
