McFadden was released by the Steelers on Wednesday, the Pittsurgh Post-Gazette reports.

This move was to be expected after Pittsburgh's disappointing playoff loss to Denver. McFadden was injured in the season opener and could not regain his starting job from William Gay.

McFadden isn’t especially effective in coverage, but his familiarity with the Pittsburgh defense and the team’s lack of talent at cornerback means he should see a lot of snaps in 2011. After a one-year stint in Arizona, McFadden reclaimed a starting spot in Pittsburgh last year, finishing the season with 81 tackles (74 solo). Like last year, quarterbacks will be more likely to throw at McFadden than the clearly superior Ike Taylor, so those tackles should pile up again for McFadden in 2011.

McFadden left the Steelers for the Cardinals in 2009 and responded with career-highs in both solo (64) and total (69) tackles. Neither stat placed him among the top 25 in their respective categories among DBs and he failed to record an interception for the first time in his career, but nonetheless it was a respectable campaign. Pittsburgh went after him on draft day to upgrade the corner job that went to William Gay last year, so expect him to take back his starting cornerback role in 2010.

McFadden won the Super Bowl with Pittsburgh last season and then he signed with the runner-up Cardinals in March. He has a solid grip on a starting role and he is an interesting sleeper. McFadden made 41 tackles and two interceptions in 10 games (eight starts) last season and he might be at his physical peak at age 27. He has never started more than nine games in an NFL season -- this is his best chance yet for a breakthrough campaign.

McFadden should see time at nickelback and could step in as a starter if either DeShea Townsend or Ike Taylor get hurt. Either way, his potential as an IDP player is very limited.

McFadden has the inside track over Deshea Townsend to start at cornerback in this his third season with the Steelers. McFadden tied for the team-lead with three recovered fumbles and finished with 54 tackles (47 solo).

McFadden is rapidly developing into a frontline defender. Entering his second season with Pittsburgh, the 24-year-old Florida State product could become a starter this year. He started two games as a rookie. McFadden has shown a penchant for coming up with the big play in crucial situations -- he deflected a potential TD pass by Payton Manning to help preserve a Pittsburgh playoff victory -- and should see his role continue to expand with experience.

McFadden is a physical defender who figures to see extensive action in his rookie year. The second-round pick only intercepted one pass in his last year with Florida State, but that was apparently because opponents rarely threw the ball his way.
