An NFL journeyman, Jones should provide the team with depth if they desperately need it, but otherwise will likely spend his time on the practice squad.
Jones sprained his ankle during offseason workouts, and lost ground to Jason Hill, Dominique Zeigler, Kyle Williams, and others in the battle for the two remaining wide receiver slots. Even if he makes the team, it will be as the fourth or fifth wideout and barring injury Jones won't be fantasy relevant.
Jones enters the season as the 49ers' fourth wide receiver and Isaac Bruce's primary backup at flanker. He has had piqued the interest of fantasy owners in the past with his potential, but he'll likely disappoint those expecting solid production from him once again as part of a run-first offense.
If the Titans had a potential sleeper last season at the wide receiver position it was Jones. However, 2007 was a disappointing season for Jones, as injuries limited him to just nine games and two starts. In that time, he had just 21 catches for 248 yards and two touchdowns. Currently, he is behind Justin Gage, newly acquired Justin McCareins, Roydell Williams and Biren Ealy on the depth. The one time sleeper needs to have a good camp just to remain on the roster.
At press time, Jones enters the 2007 as the Titans’ de facto No. 1 receiver – at least until David Givens returns from a torn ACL and broken femur. Moreover, Jones scored three of his four touchdowns in the season’s last six games and generally was more involved in the passing offense (to the extent there was one) after Vince Young took over at quarterback. We’d expect Young to improve as a passer in Year 2, and Jones is the receiver most likely to benefit. At 6-1, 210, Jones has good size, and he was able to leverage it in his four red-zone targets last year, scoring on three. Jones has above average speed and good hands, and he’s not afraid to make the tough catch in traffic. Like most young, athletic receivers, his route running needs work.
Jones, who appeared to be in front of fellow rookies Courtney Roby and Roydell Williams at times last season, now has David Givens and Drew Bennett locked in to the starting wide receiver spots in front of him. With Tennessee's renewed commitment to the run and a passing game that favors short tosses to running backs and tight ends, Jones will likely be a seldom-used option unless someone gets hurt.
Jones is one of a trio of receivers drafted by the Titans in 2005, and has played well enough to position himself ahead of Courtney Roby and Roydell Williams at the early stages of training camp. He has also done work as the team's punt returner, and could provide good late value in deep fantasy leagues if he plays his way into the starting line-up as a slot receiver.
