Walter signed with the Patriots in August to provide some veteran depth at QB behind Tom Brady. Chances are, Kevin O'Connell will slot in as the No. 2 guy most weeks, but Walter has a big arm and some starting experience at the NFL level, so he could see the field if Brady suffers any setbacks.
Walter will likely be the backup to JaMarcus Russell. Russell will likely receive nearly every snap, so Walter will only see the field if Russell gets injured.
Outside shot to open the season as the starting QB if Josh McCown falters and JaMarcus Russell is deemed not ready. If so, he (hopefully) will not be starting for any fantasy teams on opening day.
Walter has moved up the depth chart and begins 2006 as the backup to Aaron Brooks and is poised to become Oakland's quarterback of the future. He has all the physical tools to become a legit fantasy option down the road.
Expect the team to groom Walter as the quarterback of the future. He's armed with a strong arm and is a solid fit for the team's downfield passing attack.
