After two extremely shaky years with the Saints, David's time with the team may be running short. New Orleans will give him the summer to prove that he can be a capable defender for the squad. While he has shown the penchant for the big play, leading the team in interceptions and returning a fumble recovery for a touchdown in 2007, his poor coverage skills have made it difficult for the team to keep him on the field and will likely lead to his release from the club.
The Saints acquired David in 2007 to add consistency to their secondary, but the four-year veteran was anything but consistent last season. In addition to missing several weeks with a fractured forearm, David was arguably one of the least effective starting corners in the league, giving up a tremendous number of big plays. The Saints expected David to be a staple of their secondary when they signed him to a four-year, $16.5 million deal in 2007, but barring a great training camp, David will enter 2008 as the backup to Randall Gay and Mike McKenzie.
David has started every game of his three-year career, and will add some much needed consistency to the Saints' secondary after being acquired from the Colts as a restricted free agent this offseason. Though David, who finished the 2006 season with 55 tackles and two interceptions, was arguably the Saints' biggest offseason acquisition, he doesn't put up the type of numbers that are valued in an IDP, so his fantasy value is limited.
