Allen is likely to test the free agent market, according to ESPN writer Jeremy Fowler.
ANALYSIS
Recognizing the need to improve the defensive backfield, Pittsburgh needs to determine if Allen, who will be 34 before the start of the season, fits in its plans. Despite setting single-season career highs in tackles and passes defended in 2015, Allen could find himself on the open market where, considering his age, he is unlikely to receive anything more than one-year offers. Still, regardless of the team, if he is on the field Allen is a respectable IDP option.

The retirement of Troy Polamalu creates an opportunity for Allen to start this season, although he may split playing time with Shamarko Thomas.
Allen will likely be in the rotation with Troy Polamalu and Shamarko Thomas at strong safety.
Former Steeler will get a chance to start at strong safety in Dallas, but his IDP value will be limited.
Originally drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the fourth round of the 2004 NFL Draft, Allen signed with the Steelers in 2010. Pittsburgh has two top-notch safeties in Troy Polamalu and Ryan Clark, so Allen will likely be little more than a back-up in 2012.
Allen was signed by the Steelers to add some depth at the safety position, but mainly to help out in special teams coverage -- a sore spot for the team in 2009. He is not one to target in fantasy leagues as he recorded 20 total tackles or less in four of his six seasons.
Allen lost his starting job in 2007 but has been a key reserve since, backing up both safety positions. In addition, Allen was the Buccaneers' special-teams captain in 2008. Expect him to reprise both roles in 2009.
Backup free/strong safety. No interceptions, 17 solo tackles in 2007.
Starting free safety in 2006 (four interceptions over three full seasons), but he'll face competition in camp.
He'll take over from Dexter Jackson as the free safety on the Bucs. Three interceptions, 34 tackles, 14 assists and a fumble recovery for a TD in just 13 games last year. Broke his thumb in the first week of camp, so check his status before your IDP draft.
Will compete for a reserve defensive back spot in camp.
If he makes the team, Allen will play primarily on special teams.
