Newberry retired on Tuesday after hurting his left knee getting ready for training camp, the Associated Press reports.
ANALYSIS
The 33-year-old Newberry was expected to provide depth at guard and center. Newberry started three games for San Diego last season.

It's possible the Falcons see Newberry as a swing backup at center and guard, but it's unlikely he will take the starting center spot from Todd McClure. He's definitely an expensive backup given he's heading into his 12th season.
The veteran center was signed as insurance in case Nick Hardwick is not fully recovered by the time the regular season begins.
Coming off severe knee injuries. Will compete with Jake Grove for the staring center position.
Battled shoulder injuries and a knee injury before undergoing micro-fracture surgery on his right knee in December. Received clearance to play in July, but will be limited to one practice a day, and because of that, he will start as the No. 2 center behind Eric Heitmann. If healthy, he will be the starting center.
Starting center but missed much of 2004 with back/knee injury and had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee in May 2005, putting this year in doubt. He plans to have "micro-fracture" surgery, when small fractures are sustained to the knee in hope the scar tissue will serve as cartilage, after the season.
Newberry played last season with a torn ligament in his left ankle that required off-season surgery. He will once again be the rock in the center of the team's offensive line.
