The Patriots will release Banta-Cain on Thursday, Boston Globe reports. The team will save $2 million by releasing him.
ANALYSIS
It's quite possible that Banta-Cain, who had surgery four days ago to repair an abdominal strain, could be brought back by the Pats at a reduced rate after he is officially released.

Banta-Cain, who led the Patriots with 10 sacks in 2009, while recording 55 tackles and two forced fumbles, is slated to start at right outside linebacker this season, where he'll continue to be a vital cog in the team's pass rush.
Banta-Cain had a disappointing stint with the 49ers after signing with them in March of 2007, but he has both experience and success in the Pats' system and adds some plug-and-play depth to the team's outside linebacking corps.
Banta-Cain is expected to be a backup on the 49ers' defensive line, and provides no fantasy value as an IDP.
Banta-Cain, signed as a free agent thos offaseaon from New England, is a key component in the 49ers' switch to a 3-4 defense. He'll be at one outside linebacker spot opposite Manny Lawson, with Derek Smith and Brandon Moore inside along with Patrick Willis. Bunta-Cain is being counted on to provide SF with a pass-rush from the outside and could garner close to double digits in sacks.
Banta-Cain is best known for briefly losing his 2003 Super Bowl ring at a suburban shopping mall. Look for him to be more a part of the LB mix in 2004.
Late seventh-round draft choice, will be doing well to simply make the club.
