Domanick Williams: Will Be Released

Knee
March 23, 2007
The Texans will release Williams (formerly Davis), who has been unable to play because of a knee injury, the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Williams' fate was probably sealed when it became apparent that he needed more surgery done on the knee that landed him on IR last year. If he can get healthy enough to pass a team physical down the road, he figures to get a shot with another organization.

Davis was placed on injured reserve in Sept. 2006. Davis dodged a huge bullet when the Texans elected to pass on Reggie Bush in the 2006 draft. His three seasons in Houston have been something of a mixed bag, but heading into the draft Davis seemed like exactly the kind of solid, but limited, player NFL clubs have no qualms about pushing to the side when an opportunity to upgrade presents itself. With Mario Williams on the roster instead of Bush, however and Davis out for the year, the decision will come under more scrutiny. A short runner with bulk (5-9, 220) and a low center of gravity, Davis has the power to move the pile, but enough quickness to avoid it when he spots a hole. After missing a few games in two previous seasons, Davis missed five in 2005 with a knee injury that required minor offseason surgery. His performance inside the 20 also slipped; after being something of a red-zone demon with 13 scores (in 67 touches) in 2004, Davis saw far fewer opportunities last year, as the team tried to keep him fresh, and did less with those opportunities (4-for-26). When healthy, Davis is a threat in the passing game, and four of his six TDs in 2005 came through the air.
After battling a sprained ankle and a bruised thigh early in the year, Davis came on strong over the last nine games of the season, rushing for 891 yards and 10 touchdowns, while catching 43 passes for 346 yards. Prorate those numbers over a full season – 1,544 yards, 18 TDs, 76 catches – and you’re looking at Marshall Faulk in his prime. Oddly enough, Davis’ big surge almost exactly coincided with quarterback David Carr’s second-half collapse, and the Texans went 3-6 over that stretch (after a 4-3 start). So it’s unclear whether Davis’ individual success will persuade coach Dom Capers to use him to the same extent in 2005. At 5-9, 221, Davis is short, but he’s not small, so we’re not as concerned as some about his ability to shoulder a full load. Davis has good shiftiness, gets up to speed quickly and gets outside the tackles, but he has just slightly above-average speed in the open field. Davis is an excellent route runner with solid hands, and as a result, finished second in the NFL among backs in receptions (68) and receiving yards (588). Davis also performed respectably around the goal line, converting 8-of-19 runs from inside the five for scores (42 percent).
Davis is an exciting player on an offense that seems poised for a 2003-Bengals-like breakout. More shifty than fast, Davis is considered by many to be a situational back. But 216 pounds seems like more than enough bulk for a 5-9 frame. The stamina question is legitimate, however, as Davis peaked up until his 10th carry and then steadily declined in terms of yards per rush afterward (averaging under 3.5 after his 10th attempt). Davis’ upside is considerable, as he couples his rushing skills with Thurman Thomas-type ability as a receiving threat. He does have a lot to prove as a goal-line runner (just 5-for-18 scoring inside the 10 last year). Davis and the Texans ranked 16th in converting all short-yardage runs. So Davis owners have to be wary of the risk he’ll be taken out in short-yardage and goal-line situations.
Davis will see little action out of the backfield, listed fourth on the depth chart. Any value from the fourth-round draft pick will come as a return man.
