He's shown flashes of ability here and there, but for anything special to happen for Chatman in 2008, Thomas Jones and Leon Washington need to get hurt. At least they're all working behind a vastly improved offensive line; someone will get some yards working behind Faneca and Co.
Emerged in camp as a challenger to starter Ronnie Brown and while it's hard to imagine him taking the job outright, the slimmed-down Chatman has played well enough to possibly earn enough carries this season to merit a late-round dart.
Chatman is the favorite to be the primary backup to Ladainian Tomlinson again this season, but he was only called upon to rush a total of eight times in that role last year. His greatest value will be as insurance for fantasy owners who select Tomlinson early.
Chatman will probably start the 2003 season as the No. 2 back behind LaDainian Tomlinson, so if LT suffers any sort of serious injury, find Chatman's name on your waiver wire as soon as possible. Chatman was a star in college at Eastern Washington, and backs who play under Marty Schottenheimer tend to post strong numbers.
