The Patriots have signed Colvin, the Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
In his second stint with the Patriots, Colvin will provide some needed depth at outside linebacker with Adalius Thomas out and Pierre Woods having left Sunday's loss to the Steelers with a mouth injury. Colvin had trouble staying healthy when he was with the Patriots before, but he knows their system well and is pretty close to plug and play, conditioning permitted.

Colvin was considered the pass-rushing threat Houston has been looking for to lineup opposite Mario Williams. However, Colvin never panned out in Houston and was waived as part of the team's final cuts in August. He'll be 31 this season and has suffered a few injuries in his career, so being an every-down player is no guarantee.
Colvin ended the 2006 season strong with six sacks in his last eight games, and he finally appeared up to speed following his gradual recovery from a hip injury that sidelined him in 2004. Colvin’s tackle numbers are nothing to get excited about, but he should be in great shape entering the 2007 season and primed for double-digit sack numbers.
Colvin finally appears to have returned the form that saw him record a total of 21 sacks for the Bears in 2001-02. His hip issues seemingly a thing of the past, Colvin, who finished the 2005 season strong, has a chance to crack double figures in QB take-downs in 2006 as he will line up as the team's starting right outside linebacker.
Colvin has worked his way back from hip surgery in 2003 and though he may have lost a bit of explosiveness, he still can find ways to get to the passer and has double-digit sack potential if his strong performance in the Super Bowl is any indication.
Colvin, who collected 21 sacks for Chicago in 2001 and 2002, signed with Patriots as free agent prior to last season, but had his season cut short by a serious hip injury that some feared was career-threatening. Colvin expects to be ready for the 2004 campaign, but the question is will he still have the quickness and burst off the edge that made him one of the top young linebackers in the game? Only time will tell.
One of the best pass-rushing backers in the league, Colvin led NFL linebackers with 10.5 sacks and made 55 tackles with Chicago in 2002. Colvin signed with the Patriots in March, and he'll most likely continue to be used as an outside linebacker who rushes the passer in the Patriots' 3-4 scheme.
