Elam plans to sign a one-day contract with Denver on Wednesday, so he can officially retire as a member of the Broncos, the Denver Post reports.

Elam, a member of two Super Bowl championship teams with the Broncos, tied an NFL record by hitting a 63-yard field goal in 1998. The three-time Pro Bowler finishes up his career sixth in NFL history with 1,983 points scored.

Moving from the Broncos to the young and unproven Falcons last season dropped Elam’s draft stock, but he outperformed expectations thanks to one of the league’s most improved offenses. Elam scored 129 points last season on a career-high 93.5 percent kicking (29-of-31), notching 42 extra-points. With Tony Gonzalez joining Atlanta’s dynamic trio of Matt Ryan, Michael Turner and Roddy White, Elam is poised to be among the league’s most productive kickers. Kicking in a dome doesn’t hurt, either, though don’t expect a repeat of 90-plus accuracy.
The long-time Bronco kicker moved to Atlanta in the offseason and comes off a solid 27-of- 31 performance, making 90 percent of his kicks the last two seasons combined. Atlanta's offense was a disaster last season, and while it should be better with free agent acquisition Michael Turner, the prospect of a rookie or inexperienced starter at quarterback – plus concerns on defense – leaves us doubtful about Elam's chances to be a useful fantasy kicker this season.
Elam has long been one of the best kickers in the NFL and could easily top our list. With the addition of Travis Henry, the Broncos running game should have more consistency than during the post-Clinton Portis years. Jay Cutler is still inexperienced, which always causes concerns, but he should improve in his second season, and he certainly won’t be any worse than Jake Plummer. Moreover, Elam’s scoring has been as consistent as any kicker in the league – he’s been in the Top 10 in kicker scoring each of the last five years.
Elam is always a top-five kicker in our rankings because the Broncos give him ample opportunities to score – both extra points and field goals. Moreover, in the thin air of Invesco Field, the ball tends to carry farther, giving Elam a few extra yards on his kicks at home. Denver is one of five teams to generate more than 100 points from the kicking game in each of the past five seasons. In that time, the Broncos offense has averaged nearly 40 TDs and 34 FGA per season (league average: 34.8 TDs, 29.8 FGA), while Elam averages 122.6 points.
Elam has been a steady fantasy producer for the Broncos, whose offense has recently provided him with an above-average number of field goal attempts and PATs. He finished second in scoring last season with 129 points and has averaged 123 points the last four seasons. In that time, the Broncos offense set him up with 34.5 field goal attempts per season – an average team will attempt 27 to 29 field goals per year. A career 79.6-percent kicker, Elam is average, but he’s connected on 82.5 percent (113-of-137) the last four seasons.
In 11 seasons in Denver, Elam has never gone below 100 points. He’s a 79.1 percent career kicker and averaged 119.4 points for his career (7.6 ppg). The chink in his armor is his accuracy between 40-49 yards, where he’s just 60.2 percent for his career (69.4 percent league average). However, he'll continue to be amongst the league elite at kicker so draft him with confidence.
Consistency over time is highly valued. Denver apparently values it, too, because the Broncos signed Elam to a five-year deal in the offseason. The 10-year veteran has averaged 119 points per season in his career. His accuracy dropped in 2002 as he hit just 72.2 percent (26 of 36), but he still had 120 points. Kicking at high altitude is an obvious benefit, but Elam also is hurt by bad weather. Denver's change at quarterback, with Jake Plummer taking over, shouldn't impact Elam. Only his field goal percentage can do that.
