Grant announced his retirement Wednesday, Sirius XM's Adam Caplan reports.
ANALYSIS
Grant received some tepid interest on the free agent market and determined it wasn't worthwhile to return to the NFL in a low-paying backup role. He'll hang up his cleats having not missed an entire game in his career over stints with the Panthers, Jaguars, Seahawks and Giants.

Adds depth at the safety spot, assuming Kenny Phillips can make it back. If Phillips is out, Grant could push for more playing time.
Grant tied his career with 77 tackles last season from the strong safety spot. The Seahawks restructured the defense to improve after last year's disappointment, which if successful could mean fewer tackling opportunities for Grant. He's good for a couple of interceptions in addition to 65-70 tackles.
Grant will be the starting strong safety for the Seahawks and should see an IDP value similar to 2007 when he racked up 72 tackles and three interceptions.
Grant signed with the Seahawks in the offseason and will start at strong safety. The Seahawks were continually burned in the secondary last season, causing Michael Boulware to lose his starting SS assignment. Expect little more than a couple of interceptions and 60-plus tackles for Grant.
Grant deserves a lot of credit for what he brings to the Jaguars secondary. Rashean Mathis and Donovan Darius get attention for big plays, but Grant is the quarterback of the secondary and is always cognizant of changes on the field. Count on him to grab his annual sack and pick off a few passes in 2006. He will continue to be form a mean safety duo with Darius.
Grant was named to his first Pro Bowl last season as an alternate at Free Safety. He ranked sixth on the team last season with 84 tackles and added two interceptions. The sixth-year safety will again line up next to Donovin Darius in the secondary.
Grant signed a four-year deal in the offseason to become the Jaguars' starting free safety in 2004. He served under Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio when the coach was coordinating with Carolina, so he will have Del Rio's trust.
Grant assembled 59 solo tackles, three interceptions and 16 passes defended in 2002 and enters 2003 as the team's starting free safety.
