Northcutt won't see many balls thrown his way as he won't be able to rise above No. 4 on the wide receiver depth chart. He'll need to make an impression on special teams if he wants to make the Lions' roster.
Northcutt will likely be Detroit's fourth wide-out. He should see some snaps with Scott Linehan calling the plays, but with uncertainty under center and superior options above him on the depth char, Northcutt won't have a ton of targets.
More was expected from Northcutt in 2007, as he finished with only 44 catches for 601 yards and four TDs. We expect those numbers to only get worse in 2008. The presence of Jerry Porter and Troy Williamson, as well as the re-emergence of Reggie Williams as a red zone threat, greatly limits Northcutt's fantasy value, and we wouldn't be surprised to see him out of the starting lineup at season's start.
Northcutt may be one of the top fantasy sleepers in 2007, and the Jaguars may be a good fit for the veteran receiver. With the team reportedly soured on starting wideouts Matt Jones and Reggie Williams, the possibility exists that Northcutt could emerge as the team's top wideout by the end of the 2007 season, albeit on a poor passing offense. He could be a strong late-round or waiver wire fantasy pickup.
Northcutt will be looked upon to make a significant contribution to the Browns' offense during the absence of Braylon Edwards (knee) during first half of the season. His fantasy value could decrease with Edwards' return, but that will depend upon Edwards' rehabilitation.
Will compete for a starting position at wide receiver in 2005, but he could find himself to be the odd man out with Braylon Edwards and Antonio Bryant the presumed Nos. 1 and 2 wideouts. Still, Northcutt is a proven weapon in the slot, where he's too quick for linebackers and many nickel corners. Northcutt should have value as a special teamer as well.
Northcutt seemed to make peace with the Browns by signing a long-term deal in late May. He is, at a minimum, the second-best receiver on the Browns’ roster. Northcutt caught more than two thirds of the team-leading 92 passes thrown his way. There’s a chance for a Santana Moss-like breakout here, but Northcutt is too small to be a significant red-zone threat (just 13 career catches inside the 20) and has proven to be injury-prone.
Northcutt should achieve similar numbers in 2003, and could over take Kevin Johnson as the second most productive wideout behind Quincy Morgan. Northcutt is also the Browns punt return man, averaging 14.7 yards per return and scoring twice.
