Da'Shawn Hand

29-Year-Old Defensive TackleDT
Miami Dolphins
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Hand, a 2018 fourth-round pick by the Lions, has only played more than 200 defensive snaps three times in his seven-year NFL career, but he could be asked to fill a noticeable role at defensive end for the Dolphins. Though Zach Sieler is entrenched as a No. 1 defensive end, Miami's defensive front is otherwise lacking for reliable pass rushers, especially with Bradley Chubb working his way back from an ACL tear and Jaelan Phillips coming back from a torn Achilles, though the latter at least expects to be ready for Week 1. Hand (quadriceps) signed with the Dolphins on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Hand appeared in only one game last season for the Titans after suffering a season-ending quadriceps injury in the team's first contest. Now healthy, he'll work to earn a depth role on Miami's defensive line.

While injuries continued to plague Hand in 2020, the fourth-year defensive end is healthy entering the upcoming season. It remains to be seen how he'll fit in the Lions' new 3-4 defense, but Hand could see quite a bit of playing time opposite Michael Brockers if rookie Levi Onwuzurike is slow to acclimate to the pros.
After a productive rookie year that was followed by an injury-plagued sophomore campaign, Hand is an X-factor for the Lions defense in 2020. The main goal for him will be to reclaim a role in the rotation after the offseason additions of Danny Shelton and Nick Williams, who are replacing Damon Harrison this offseason. If Hand can do that, the 300-pounder seems to have the upside to produce in multiple categories after logging 27 tackles, three sacks, and two forced fumbles as a rookie. The defensive tackle's previous usage on both early downs and passing downs creates multiple paths for him to do so, and we should keep in mind that Harrison logged five tackles per game (with 3.5 sacks) in a similar role in 2018 despite essentially seeing the same amount of playing time as Hand.
Hand looked like an absolute steal as a fourth-round rookie last year, racking up 27 tackles with three sacks and two forced fumbles over 13 games. He should be given every opportunity in 2019 to pick up where he left off, but an undisclosed arm injury could impact his play during the start of the season. He at least has shed the arm brace he required in July and early August and there's optimism he could be ready for Week 1. If so, he could be a sneaky pick for sack production playing on a suddenly fearsome Lions defensive line that now includes Trey Flowers, Damon Harrison, Mike Daniels and A'Shawn Robinson.

Could break out in 2024
DTMiami Dolphins
May 19, 2024
Hand is Miami's top 2024 breakout candidate in the wake of Christian Wilkins' departure, according to Bradley Locker of Pro Football Focus.
ANALYSIS
Wilkins signed with the Raiders in the offseason after posting 9.0 sacks with the Dolphins in 2023. Hand didn't play much as a backup in 2023, but he excelled when on the field according to Pro Football Focus' metrics, posting an overall grade of 87.6 out of 100. That strong play could earn Hand a starting role as Wilkins' replacement on the defensive line.
