Bryce Petty

As a rookie, Petty was thrust onto the Jets' never-ending QB carousel and made four starts at the tail end of the season. He only delivered one win, while completing 75 of 133 attempts (56.4 percent) for 809 yards, three touchdowns and seven interceptions. A torn labrum in his left shoulder ended his season in Week 16, but the 25-year-old is reportedly 100 percent healthy heading into the 2017 campaign. McCown enters Week 1 as the starter, but Petty did outplay Christian Hackenberg during the preseason, making a strong case for the No. 2 job.

Petty’s projections for the coming season took a hit when the Jets re-signed quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. Now relegated to the third-string slot once again, it wouldn’t be surprising if Petty failed to see the field at all for a second consecutive campaign.

Despite his eye-popping numbers in college, there is some question as to whether Petty is a legitimate NFL quarterback or merely the latest product of Baylor's fantastic system. Petty passed for 8,055 yards with a 9.70 YPA and 61:10 TD:INT ratio his last two years in Waco, but his completion percentage was a modest 62.6, nearly 10 percent lower than that of Robert Griffin III in 2011. Petty possesses starting-caliber size (6-3, 230) and arm strength, but he comes from a one-read system and still has to learn how to scan a defense and work through progressions. Already 24 years old, he has a quick release, solid footwork/balance and is known for competitiveness, toughness and intelligence. Still, Petty's a project, and with Geno Smith and Ryan Fitzpatrick ahead of him on the depth chart, he probably won't be rushed.
