Week 18 Notes: Two Saturday games - KC/DEN, and DAL/PHI.
Playoff teams at risk of benching starters, in rough order: GB, CIN, PHI, DAL, TB.
Welcome to the Weekly Value Meter Rankings. This is a guide to help you decide who to start and sit in a given week. It's is not a season-long ranking nor a draft guide, and it's also not really intended as a free agent guide. While I appreciate that you want my opinion on pickups, every league is different, and your decision on whether to add/drop a particular player might also be dictated by other factors than who is rated higher in a given week.
Here are my operating assumptions for the rankings:
- The RB/WR/TE position rankings are for PPR leagues.
- The Flex rankings are for Standard leagues.
- 1 point per 10 rushing/receiving yards.
- 1 point per 20 passing yards.
- 4 points per passing touchdowns.
These are the rankings I use when I make my start/sit decisions. Please consult the rankings first before asking "Player X vs. Player Y?" without any other mitigating factors. Of course, I welcome debate - if you think I'm wrong, let me know. But please check out the rankings first before asking your start/sit question. This truly reflects my opinion in my leagues.
These are my particular rankings. If you want a second opinion elsewhere on the site, you can see our Weekly Projections.

Starting after Week 1, the rankings for the subsequent week will first post on Tuesday nights. I will then do a set of updates before kickoff on Thursday, and again before kickoff on Sunday morning. I will post at the top of the article in bold font when ranking updates are in progress and when they're complete.
I welcome debate on the rankings in the comments. Please keep it friendly.
Quarterbacks
1. | Kyler Murray ARZ vs. SEA |
2. | Justin Herbert LAC at LV |
3. | Patrick Mahomes KC at DEN |
4. | Tom Brady TB vs. CAR |
5. | *Matthew Stafford LA vs. SF Note: Stafford's 309 yards and two touchdowns obscure how much he struggled for much of the game against the Ravens - he had two interceptions and a lost fumble, and the Rams had to rally late to win. |
6. | *Josh Allen BUF vs. NYJ Note: Allen suffered an atrocious passing day against the Falcons, but made up for it on the ground with 81 rushing yards and two touchdowns. I moved Allen down a little bit due to the weather. |
7. | Ryan Tannehill TEN at HOU |
8. | Russell Wilson SEA at ARI |
9. | Kirk Cousins MIN vs. CHI |
10. | Taysom Hill NO at ATL |
11. | *Tyler Huntley BAL vs. PIT Note: Huntley will once again start with Lamar Jackson ruled out for the fourth week in a row. |
12. | Derek Carr LV vs. LAC |
13. | *Jimmy Garoppolo SF at LAR Note: I'm now guessing it'll be Garoppolo starting over Lance, following three limited practices for Garoppolo where he was reportedly 'looking good.' As of Friday, the Niners hadn't named a starter. ***Still appears likely to start, though the Niners still haven't named a starter.*** |
14. | *Jared Goff DET vs. GB Note: Goff (knee) has a 50-50 chance of playing this week, but the Lions are preparing for Tim Boyle to start again. It now looks like Goff is the play, with coach Dan Campbell calling him 'probable' (though 'probable' is not an official listing, so he'll be officially 'questionable'). |
15. | Carson Wentz IND at JAX |
16. | Matt Ryan ATL vs. NO |
17. | Davis Mills HOU vs. TEN |
18. | Mac Jones NE at MIA |
19. | Tua Tagovailoa MIA vs. NE |
20. | *Dak Prescott DAL at PHI Note: Dak ended with three touchdown passes in last week's loss, but was out of sync for most of the first three quarters. It's possible that Dallas will rest their starters against Philly on Saturday. |
21. | *Case Keenum CLE vs. CIN Note: Keenum is the likely starter for the Browns with Baker Mayfield out. |
22. | Ben Roethlisberger PIT at BAL |
23. | *Taylor Heinicke WAS at NYG Note: Heinicke will start the season finale against the Giants. |
24. | *Andy Dalton CHI at MIN Note: Dalton will start again this week, with Justin Fields on the COVID-IR. |
25. | *Aaron Rodgers GB at DET Note: The Packers have locked up the No. 1 seed in the NFC, making Rodgers a good rest candidate this week. Rodgers (toe) is off the injury list and coach Matt LaFleur said that he'd start, though how long he stays in the game is still up for debate. |
26. | *Sam Darnold CAR at TB Note: Darnold will start again in Week 18. Cam Newton played only one snap last week. |
27. | Gardner Minshew PHI vs. DAL |
28. | Zach Wilson NYJ at BUF |
29. | *Drew Lock DEN vs. KC Note: Lock (shoulder) was listed as limited at Tuesday's estimated practice. He's likely to start, with Brett Rypien as the backup, as Teddy Bridgewater hasn't yet started practicing. Full practice Thursday and cleared from the injury list. |
30. | *Brandon Allen CIN at CLE Note: I'm still listing Allen as the starter this week - Burrow's status depends upon the result of the Chiefs game on Saturday. |
31. | Cooper Rush DAL at PHI |
32. | Trevor Lawrence JAC vs. IND |
33. | *Jake Fromm NYG vs. WAS Note: Fromm is in line to start with Mike Glennon (wrist) unavailable. |
34. | *Jordan Love GB at DET Note: Even if Rodgers plays in Week 18, it'll probably only be sparingly, so Love should see extensive work. |
35. | *Trey Lance SF at LAR Note: Lance struggled in the first half but played much better in the second half. It's uncertain whether Garoppolo (thumb) will be ready to start in Week 18 against the Rams, but if healthy he'll probably take back over. Garoppolo had three limited practices where he reportedly looked good, so my guess is that he starts. |
36. | *Joe Burrow CIN at CLE Note: Burrow is a rest candidate this week. The Bengals are locked into winning the division, but could get as high as the No. 1 seed - though it would take some upsets for that to happen. The likely scenario is that the Chiefs win Saturday, prompting Zac Taylor to rest his starters. On Wednesday the Bengals said that Burrow would not play to rest his knee, but the team is backing off that stance a little bit, listing him as questionable after a full practice on Friday. I still think his status is directly tied to the Chiefs' result on Saturday - if they lose, he plays; if they win, he sits. ***Burrow officially has been ruled out and didn't travel to Cleveland with the team.*** |
37. | *Jalen Hurts PHI vs. DAL Note: It's possible that the Eagles will rest their starters this week. Hurts (ankle) was listed as a limited participant in Tuesday's practice. Hurts was limited Tuesday and Wednesday, but had a full practice Thursday and was cleared from the injury list. It doesn't look like they'll rest him, at least for the full game. ***INACTIVE*** |
38. | *Lamar Jackson BAL vs. PIT Note: Jackson (ankle) 'has a chance' to play Sunday against the Steelers. As with the last three weeks, I'll rank him higher once he's actually practicing without any setbacks. Jackson has been ruled out again this week. Tyler Huntley will once again start. |
39. | *Justin Fields CHI at MIN Note: Fields (ankle) will start if healthy in Week 18, but the 'if healthy' part is not a sure thing. Placed on the COVID-IR on Thursday. |
40. | *Tim Boyle DET vs. GB Note: Boyle will likely start the season finale, unless Jared Goff's knee progresses considerably. Boyle is likely back to the bench, with Jared Goff 'probable' according to coach Dan Campbell. |
41. | *Sean Mannion MIN vs. CHI Note: If Kirk Cousins (COVID) doesn't return this week, it'll be Mannion getting a second start this week against the Bears. |
42. | *Cam Newton CAR at TB Note: Newton played only one snap in the loss to the Saints. |
43. | *Teddy Bridgewater DEN vs. KC Note: Bridgewater (concussion) hasn't resumed practicing yet. |
44. | *Mike Glennon NYG vs. WAS Note: Glennon will have surgery on his left wrist and won't be available for Week 18. |
45. | *Baker Mayfield CLE vs. CIN Note: Mayfield is set to undergo surgery on his left shoulder 'as soon as possible' and will be unavailable this week against the Bengals. Mayfield's surgery has been set for Jan. 19. |
Running Backs
1. | Jonathan Taylor IND at JAX |
2. | Austin Ekeler LAC at LV |
3. | Najee Harris PIT at BAL |
4. | Alvin Kamara NO at ATL |
5. | Rashaad Penny SEA at ARI |
6. | Dalvin Cook MIN vs. CHI |
7. | David Montgomery CHI at MIN |
8. | Sony Michel LA vs. SF |
9. | *Elijah Mitchell SF at LAR Note: Mitchell (knee) has been cleared from the injury list. |
10. | *Devin Singletary BUF vs. NYJ Note: Singletary had 23 carries for 110 yards and two touchdowns, his third game in a row with double-digit carries. Now he faces the Jets in another nice matchup. |
11. | D'Onta Foreman TEN at HOU |
12. | Devonta Freeman BAL vs. PIT |
13. | *Darrel Williams KC at DEN Note: Teammate Clyde Edwards-Helaire (shoulder) once again has been ruled out. |
14. | *Saquon Barkley NYG vs. WAS Note: Barkley (ankle) has been cleared from the injury list. |
15. | *Nick Chubb CLE vs. CIN Note: Chubb picked up a rib injury on Monday night but played through it. Teammate D'Earnest Johnson went on the COVID-IR on Tuesday. Chubb was limited at practice early in the week, but was cleared from the injury list. Teammate D'Earnest Johnson has been cleared from the COVID-IR. |
16. | *Damien Harris NE at MIA Note: Harris downplayed the hamstring injury that forced him out early last week against Jacksonville. Limited practices all week, listed as questionable - which is similar to how it worked out last week. |
17. | *Rhamondre Stevenson NE at MIA Note: Stevenson was huge against the Jaguars last week after Damien Harris left with a hamstring injury - he could be in line for a big week against Miami this week if Harris sits, though Harris downplayed the injury. |
18. | *AJ Dillon GB at DET Note: ***Aaron Jones is inactive, but I'm not certain that Dillon plays more than a series or two.*** |
19. | *Samaje Perine CIN at CLE Note: Perine will start with Joe Mixon on the COVID-IR, likely backed up by Chris Evans. |
20. | *Josh Jacobs LV vs. LAC Note: Jacobs is listed as questionable with sore ribs after limited practices all week. It doesn't help that the Raiders play the last game of the week. |
21. | *Antonio Gibson WAS at NYG Note: Gibson (hip) has been cleared from the injury list. |
22. | Ezekiel Elliott DAL at PHI |
23. | *Kenneth Gainwell PHI vs. DAL Note: Gainwell currently is the only healthy RB for the Eagles. We'll see if they add anyone, or if Scott or Howard can come off the COVID-IR in time on Saturday. The Eagles have until 4:00 p.m. ET Saturday to decide whether to activate Scott and/or Howard. Otherwise, they could promote Jason Huntley and/or Kerryon Johnson from the practice squad. |
24. | D'Andre Swift DET vs. GB |
25. | Cordarrelle Patterson ATL vs. NO |
26. | *Javonte Williams DEN vs. KC Note: Williams (knee) was limited again on Tuesday. He'll once again be in a timeshare with Melvin Gordon, who is also once again limited by injury. Williams was cleared from the injury list on Thursday, as was teammate Melvin Gordon. |
27. | *James Conner ARZ vs. SEA Note: Conner (heel) is listed as questionable, while Chase Edmonds has already been ruled out. If Conner can't go, the Cardinals will have to turn to Emo Benjamin and/or Jonathan Ward. |
28. | *Melvin Gordon DEN vs. KC Note: Gordon (thumb/hip) was limited in Tuesday's practice, as was Javonte Williams. Cleared from the injury list on Thursday. |
29. | *Rex Burkhead HOU vs. TEN Note: Signed a contract extension for next season, suggesting that the full-time role is his going forward. |
30. | Jamaal Williams DET vs. GB |
31. | *Michael Carter NYJ at BUF Note: Carter suffered a concussion early in the loss to the Niners. Carter has been cleared from the concussion list. |
32. | Dare Ogunbowale JAC vs. IND |
33. | *Le'Veon Bell TB vs. CAR Note: Bell's snap count picked up because Ronald Jones (ankle) and Ke'Shawn Vaughn (ribs) were banged up. Bell should play a significant role this week, though he'll be sharing the work with Ke'Shawn Vaughn. |
34. | Duke Johnson MIA vs. NE |
35. | *Ke'Shawn Vaughn TB vs. CAR Note: Vaughn injured his ribs in the win over the Jets. He 'might' be available to play. Vaughn was cleared from the injury list, and will split carries with Le'Veon Bell, with Ronald Jones (ankle) out. |
36. | Devontae Booker NYG vs. WAS |
37. | Chuba Hubbard CAR at TB |
38. | *D'Ernest Johnson CLE vs. CIN Note: Johnson tested positive for COVID on Tuesday. Johnson was activated from the COVID-IR on Saturday. |
39. | Alexander Mattison MIN vs. CHI |
40. | *Jaret Patterson WAS at NYG Note: Teammate Antonio Gibson has been cleared to play after sitting out last week. |
41. | *Cam Akers LA vs. SF Note: Akers (Achilles) is a good bet to play this week. ***Akers will make his season debut Sunday, though he's expected to have a small role.*** |
42. | Peyton Barber LV vs. LAC |
43. | Corey Clement DAL at PHI |
44. | Justin Jackson LAC at LV |
45. | *Chris Evans CIN at CLE Note: Evans could be pretty involved in the offense this week with Joe Mixon out. |
46. | Dontrell Hilliard TEN at HOU |
47. | *Patrick Taylor GB at DET Note: ***Taylor will back up A.J. Dillon with Aaron Jones inactive.*** |
48. | Zack Moss BUF vs. NYJ |
49. | Brandon Bolden NE at MIA |
50. | *Tevin Coleman NYJ at BUF Note: Coleman has been activated from the COVID-IR. |
51. | Derrick Gore KC at DEN |
52. | *David Johnson HOU vs. TEN Note: Activated from the COVID-IR, and cleared from his quad injury. |
53. | Mike Davis ATL vs. NO |
54. | Ameer Abdullah CAR at TB |
55. | *DeeJay Dallas SEA at ARI Note: Dallas (quad) was able to participate in a full practice Wednesday. |
56. | Tony Jones NO at ATL |
57. | Eno Benjamin ARZ vs. SEA |
58. | *Jeff Wilson SF at LAR Note: Wilson received only 12 offensive snaps and no carries in the win over the Texans - the Niners went immediately back to Elijah Mitchell as a workhorse back in his return. |
59. | *Ty Johnson NYJ at BUF Note: Michael Carter has been cleared from the concussion protocol. |
60. | *Austin Walter NYJ at BUF Note: Walter had 14 carries last week, most of them coming after Michael Carter left with a concussion. But Ty Johnson took the goal line carries. Carter has been cleared from the concussion protocol. |
61. | Phillip Lindsay MIA vs. NE |
62. | Jonathan Williams WAS at NYG |
63. | Craig Reynolds DET vs. GB |
64. | Myles Gaskin MIA vs. NE |

68. | Nyheim Hines IND at JAX |
69. | Joshua Kelley LAC at LV |
70. | Khalil Herbert CHI at MIN |
71. | *Joe Mixon CIN at CLE Note: Possible rest issue looms. On the COVID-IR and won't play. ***Remained on the COVID list on Saturday, and is officially out.*** |
72. | *Kareem Hunt CLE vs. CIN Note: Hunt (ankle) was inactive after all last week. With Nick Chubb dealing with a rib injury and D'Earnest Johnson on the COVID-IR, there might be more incentive for the Browns to play him this week. Hunt has been limited all week, and is listed as questionable. At this point, it doesn't make sense to risk him unless he's fully healed. ***INACTIVE*** |
73. | *Clyde Edwards-Helaire KC at DEN Note: Edwards-Helaire (shoulder) didn't practice Tuesday, but coach Andy Reid said he still has a chance to play. Ruled out again for this week. |
74. | *Mark Ingram NO at ATL Note: Ingram (knee) is listed as questionable, but was held out of practice both Thursday and Friday. |
75. | *Aaron Jones GB at DET Note: I have to think that Jones will be limited at best this week given that he was already dealing with a sore knee, plus the Packers have clinched the first seed in the NFC. Jones is listed as questionable. Matt LaFleur said he'd play his starters, but how much? ***INACTIVE*** |
76. | *Boston Scott PHI vs. DAL Note: Scott was placed on the COVID-IR on Monday. |
77. | *Jordan Howard PHI vs. DAL Note: Howard was placed on the COVID-IR on Monday. |
78. | *Tony Pollard DAL at PHI Note: Pollard was limited in practice Tuesday with his sore foot. Pollard was initially listed as questionable, but now has been ruled out. |
79. | *Derrick Henry TEN at HOU Note: Henry (foot) is likely to practice Wednesday, though he's a 'long shot' to be activated from the IR in time to play against Houston. Henry was designated to return from the IR on Wednesday, but hasn't yet been activated - the Titans have until Saturday afternoon to make that decision. ***NOT ACTIVATED BY THE TITANS.*** |
80. | *Ronald Jones TB vs. CAR Note: Jones left last week with an ankle injury and needed an MRI on Monday, the results of which are pending. Jones has been ruled out for this week. |
81. | *Chase Edmonds ARZ vs. SEA Note: Edmonds will be held out with a rib injury. |
82. | *Miles Sanders PHI vs. DAL Note: Sanders (hand) didn't participate in Tuesday's practice and is unlikely to play, though the Eagles have left the door slightly open. |

66. | Marvin Jones JAC vs. IND |
67. | *Quez Watkins PHI vs. DAL Note: Watkins (knee) was limited in Tuesday's walk-through. |

69. | Lil'Jordan Humphrey NO at ATL |
70. | Nick Westbrook-Ikhine TEN at HOU |
71. | Kenny Golladay NYG vs. WAS |

7. | Pat Freiermuth PIT at BAL |
8. | *Darren Waller LV vs. LAC Note: Waller (knee) is expected to participate in Wednesday's walk-through practice, with the hope that he can accelerate his activity on Thursday & Friday. Waller (knee) had three limited practices this week - he's listed as questionable. I'm going to rank him as if he's playing, but you're going to have to watch this all the way up to kickoff Sunday night. |
9. | Dawson Knox BUF vs. NYJ |
10. | Mike Gesicki MIA vs. NE |
11. | *Noah Fant DEN vs. KC Note: Fant was limited in Tuesday's practice with a quad issue. Cleared from the injury list. |
12. | Tyler Conklin MIN vs. CHI |
13. | Gerald Everett SEA at ARI |
14. | *John Bates WAS at NYG Note: Increased workload likely with Ricky Seals-Jones hurt. |
15. | Tyler Higbee LA vs. SF |
16. | *Foster Moreau LV vs. LAC Note: Moreau is in danger of getting a reduced role - Darren Waller might be able to play this week. |
17. | Cole Kmet CHI at MIN |

36. | Jimmy Graham CHI at MIN |
37. | Luke Farrell JAC vs. IND |
38. | *Kyle Pitts ATL vs. NO Note: Pitts left in the third quarter last week with a hamstring injury. If he doesn't play Sunday, he'll still finish the season with 1,018 receiving yards, albeit with only one touchdown. Limited practices all week - he'll be a game-time decision. If he plays, I'd put Pitts around 10. |
39. | *C.J. Uzomah CIN at CLE Note: Uzomah (knee) didn't practice all week, and is listed as questionable. I doubt he plays. ***Active, but his activity level is unclear.*** |
