Doesn't play Saturday
Undisclosed
September 28, 2023
Tyler didn't log any snaps in Saturday's game versus Northwestern.
ANALYSIS
Tyler received just three carries in Week 3 after logging 10 and 17 in the two previous contests, respectively. While there is no report of Tyler suffering an injury, this sharp decline in workload could indicate the senior running back is being phased out of the offense.

Tyler was a workhorse last season for Western Michigan, logging 209 carries for 1,027 yards and seven scores. After four productive years with the Broncos, Tyler initially decided to transfer to Oklahoma State before flipping to Minnesota. With the Gophers, he’ll have big shoes to fill after Mohammed Ibrahim racked up 1,665 yards and 20 touchdowns a season ago. Minnesota has relied heavily on the ground game in recent years while dealing with shakey seasons from former quarterback Tanner Morgan. As the Gophers break in a new starting quarterback, Athan Kaliakmanis, it’s reasonable to expect them to continue to ride the running game. Tyler has the experience and proven ability to be a very capable runner in the Big Ten. Minnesota does have some experience in the running back room behind Tyler in Zach Evans and Bryce Williams, but neither have proven to be a top-end lead back like Tyler. This is his backfield to lose, and he should see the vast majority of carries for the Gophers this fall.
Tyler faces workload limitations due to both his small frame (5-foot-8, 185 pounds) and the presence of teammate bruiser back La'Darius Jefferson, but when he's on the field Tyler is one of the country's most productive running backs. He has a career rushing average of 6.3 yards per carry and was even better than that in 2021, when he ran for 1,150 yards and nine touchdowns on just 178 carries (6.5 YPC). It's possible the Broncos lean more on Tyler in 2021 as they try to replace their quarterback (Kaleb Eleby) and star wideout (Skyy Moore).
With LeVante Bellamy gone, the stars seem aligned for Tyler this year after he averaged 5.7 yards per carry in a limited role as a freshman last year. The arrival of transfers Jaxson Kincaide (Nevada) and La'Darius Jefferson (Michigan State) is a bit of a harsh to the buzz, though only Kincaide (a grad transfer) is likely to be eligible this year. Even a majority of the workhorse role Bellamy is leaving behind would push Tyler toward a breakout this year.
