Nelson came off the bench and threw an interception in the Cougars' 23-6 Poinsettia Bowl win over San Diego State.
ANALYSIS
Injuries took a toll on Nelson throughout his college career, and he lost his job to James Lark after Lark tossed six touchdown passes in BYU's final regular season game while Nelson was out with rib and lung injuries. Nelson did get to attempt two passes in the Poinsettia Bowl, so it's probably safe to assume that he is healthy even if his performance left something to be desired. He could get a shot in the NFL as an undrafted free agent, but probably isn't worth a draft pick.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2012
2010
Initially written off as a running specialist at quarterback, Nelson replaced the disappointing five-star recruit Jake Heaps as a starter in 2011 and showed he had turned himself into a good passer, too. In addition to rushing for 392 yards (4.5 YPC), Nelson averaged 8.5 yards per pass as he threw for 1,717 yards and 19 touchdowns compared to just seven interceptions. Combine Nelson's new skills with his elite receivers (Cody Hoffman and Ross Apo combined for 19 touchdowns in 2011), and you have a legitimate fantasy QB. It also helps that BYU's schedule isn't intimidating – Utah and Notre Dame are the only teams that seem capable of stopping Nelson from posting multiple touchdowns.
Nelson will compete with Jake Heaps, the No. 1 quarterback recruit from 2010, for the starting quarterback spot. He might win initially, but he's going to struggle to hold him off. Look for Nelson to mostly be a running specialist in 2010.
