2021
In an elite Group of Five passing game, Cephus was the possession guy in 2022. He had 87 catches over 13 games, but they went for 985 yards and six scores. Now, those are still top-notch numbers, but it showed his role compared to Zakhari Franklin and De'Corian Clark. While the Roadrunners have moved up to the AAC, they've kept Jeff Traylor at head coach and also kept Frank Harris as their quarterback. Clark is back, but Franklin is not. He had 93 catches for 1,137 yards and 15 touchdowns, and he turned that into a transfer to Ole Miss. Cephus has been a stellar second target for Franklin for the last couple of years. In 2021, he had 71 catches for 819 yards and six scores. Cephus may benefit greatly from Franklin's change of scenery, as it will likely allow him to move outside to a more natural fit at his 6-foot-3 size.
The Roadrunners had three receivers impress in 2021, and one of those was Cephus. That’s what happens when you have the second-best offense in your conference. All of those guys are back, as is starting quarterback Frank Harris, but that’s not a bad thing clearly. Cephus managed 71 catches for 819 yards and six touchdowns in 14 games last season. The one concern? Over his final three games of the season Cephus only had seven catches for 79 yards.
Cephus began 2020 with three games in a row with a touchdown and ended it with back-to-back games with a score. Of course, he didn't score once in between that, which means he had five touchdowns in 12 games. Sincere McCormick drives the UTSA offense in the run game, but the passing game gets it done as well. The Roadrunners might quietly have the best offense in Conference USA. Cephus or Zakhari Franklin will both have a chance to be the top receiver, and they will both get plenty of targets. Hopefully, Cephus can be more consistent in 2021, because the potential is there.
