Stepping away from team, won't play in 2016
Personal
September 9, 2016
Jefferson (personal) is stepping away from the team and will not play this season, David Smoak of ESPN 1660 in Waco reports. Head coach Jim Grobe told reporters that he hopes Jefferson will be able to return to the team in the spring.
ANALYSIS
Jefferson had been sidelined this season with lingering foot and rib issues that reportedly caused him to fall behind in his conditioning; however, Smoak is reporting that Jefferson is dealing with a personal issue on top of those health problems and will thus step away from the team this season. As Grobe said, the hope is that Jefferson will be able to rejoin the team over the winter and be ready for next season. For the purposes of this season, Baylor will lean on Terence Williams and JaMycal Hasty as Shock Linwood's backups. Jefferson averaged 7.35 yards per carry last year en route to reaching the 1,000-yard mark.

2016 Fantasy Outlook
Although Baylor is generally viewed as a high-flying offense with a big time passing attack, the run game fuels the Bears’ success on that side of the ball. Jefferson was one of two Baylor backs to run for 1,000 yards last season, and he did so on just 136 carries, which averages out to an astounding 7.35 yards per carry. A good chunk of Jefferson’s production came late in the season when Baylor retooled its offensive philosophy after having to turn to a converted wide receiver at quarterback in light of season-ending injuries to Seth Russell and Jarrett Stidham. Still, Jefferson was dangerous and explosive before Baylor started putting an extra emphasis on the run game. Seth Russell will be back under center for the Bears, but Baylor will still likely be leaning plenty on the run game. Jefferson may have done enough late in the year to overtake Shock Linwood as the lead back, but Baylor does distribute its carries relatively evenly. In all, Jefferson has the explosiveness and the team context to reach the 1,000 yard mark yet again in 2016.

Not expected to play Saturday, coach cites conditioning issue
Foot
September 8, 2016
Jefferson (foot) is not expected to play Saturday against SMU, Adam Grosbard of the Dallas Morning News reports. "Johnny's gotta get in shape. That's the biggest problem for him. He's missed so much playing time with the foot and the ribs. So I think he's probably physically capable from an injury standpoint but he's going to have to get in shape," said head coach Jim Grobe earlier in the week.
