Boise State: Jay Ajayi Will Declare For Draft
December 21, 2014
Ajayi has decided to declare for the 2015 NFL Draft following the Bronco's game against Arizona in the Fiesta Bowl on Dec. 31, Chadd Cripe of the Idaho Statesman reports.
ANALYSIS
Ajayi will forgo his senior season with Boise State after he put up an impressive 1,689 rushing yards and 29 total touchdowns during the regular season of his junior campaign. It's still unclear where he'll land in the draft, although he will most likely be a pivotal piece in the Bronco's offensive attack against the Wildcats on Dec. 31.

If Ajayi can hold on to the ball (four fumbles in 2013) he should be one of the nation's best. He's a big back at 6-0, 216, but he showed a lot of athleticism in his first year as starter last season, bolting for 1,425 yards and 18 touchdowns on just 249 carries (5.7 YPC) and catching 22 passes for 222 yards and another touchdown. With a promising quarterback (Grant Hedrick) and two impressive receivers (Matt Miller and Shane Williams-Rhodes), the Broncos are poised to score a lot this year, and Ajayi will be their primary touchdown source. He could even improve on his receiving production this season as the senior trio of Geraldo Boldewijn, Aaron Burks and Kirby Moore graduated.
Ajayi is set to serve as the next great Boise State running back, continuing the tradition started by Ian Johnson, Jeremy Avery, Doug Martin and D.J. Harper. Harper's graduation has set the stage for Ajayi to take over after finishing his freshman year with 548 yards and four touchdowns on just 82 carries (6.7 YPC). There's no obvious contender for carries on the 2013 Boise roster other than Ajayi, so Ajayi should see a big workload not unlike what Martin saw as a 20-carry player in 2011.
Ajayi is one of several candidates in a very crowded, very unproven Boise State backfield to emerge with a backup role behind starter D.J. Harper. Devan Demas, Jack Fields and Drew Wright appear to be the other relevant names, but it's anyone's guess how that shakes out. It generally appears as if Wright has the upper hand, though, because he's a senior who averaged over five yards per carry for Boise in 2011.
