The importance of this story lies not so much in Smith's rescinding his verbal commitment as the reason cited as to why he'd decided to do so - all the drama surrounding the recent annoucement by Fresno State and Nevada that both schools will be moving to the Mountain West Conference. "Due to all of the uncertainty in the WAC," the West Salem High School quarterback commented on the situation, "I have decided to open up my recruitment, and decommit from San Jose State." A top 100 recruit under center for the Class of 2011, Smith was heavily recruited by the Spartans' coaching staff and turned down offers from schools such as Wyoming and Eastern Washington in order to commit to SJSU. That he elected to look elsewhere to play collegiate football just one month after providing a verbal commitment to San Jose State signals the start of what could be a troubling trend for WAC schools seeking talented recruits, thanks in no small part to the instability produced by the departure of two of the conference's premier programs.
