Moves to backup role
San Diego State coach Brady Hoke said Tuesday that Burmeister will play wide receiver in addition to playing backup quarterback in Saturday's game versus Nevada, Kirk Kenney of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Burmeister was replaced by Jalen Mayden against Hawaii last week after throwing only eight passes. Mayden will start Saturday after his impressive performance in which he went 24-for-36 for 322 yards and one touchdown. It is unclear how much receiving action Burmeister will get, but he did catch a touchdown pass last season at Virginia Tech.

2022 Fantasy Outlook
Burmeister was named the Aztecs’ starting quarterback following spring practices, and doesn’t appear to be in danger of being usurped heading into the season. The former Hokie spent two years in Blacksburg, and in 2021 he put together a decent season, tossing for 1,960 yards, 14 touchdowns and four interceptions, along with 521 rushing yards and two scores on the ground. That versatility certainly gave him an edge over the quarterback competition in the spring, and he’ll look to carry that momentum into the 2022 season. The Aztecs’ return their leading receiver from 2021, Jesse Matthews, but lose their starting running back and tight end. It will be a revamped offense in San Diego in 2022, and the Aztecs are hoping Burmeister’s Power Five experience will help it click immediately.
