Thomas was forced out of Tuesday's Sun Bowl against UCLA with what the QB described as concussion-like symptoms, the Washington Post reports.

ANALYSIS
Thomas noted after the game that he briefly lost consciousness after absorbing a second-quarter hit. He was replaced in the game -- his final outing with Virginia Tech -- by redshirt junior Mark Leal.

Don’t let anyone convince you Thomas isn’t a top fantasy quarterback. True, his NFL draft stock is taking a hit each time he overthrows a wide receiver, but the truth remains Thomas has been right at 3,000 yards passing each of the past two seasons, and had 18 and 19 touchdowns respectively. Mix in an average of 497 yards rushing and 10 scores on the ground, and you’re looking at a very reliable fantasy option. Expect more of the same from Thomas in his final season in Blacksburg; the team’s running game remains unsettled, the receiving corps is reloading again, and the Thomas will be the center of the offense.

Thomas is a huge quarterback (6-6, 254) with rare running ability who looked good in his first year as starter for the Hokies, throwing for 3,013 yards (7.7 YPA), 19 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while adding 469 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground in 14 games last season. His upside is rather limited since the Virginia Tech offense is so consistently run-heavy, but he also has a high enough floor to be a fantasy starter. He could see more pass and rush attempts than he did last year, in fact, because the Hokies have a big void to fill at running back now that David Wilson is gone.

Thomas is generating a lot of hype as he heads into his first year as a starter, but not much is known about the gigantic, athletic project. He showed basically nothing in a very brief showing as a redshirt freshman last year, but Virginia Tech seems to fully believe in him anyway. His probable running ability makes him worth a pick in many scenarios, but it doesn't seem reasonable to have high expectations until Thomas shows something on the field.

Thomas is a major, major athletic talent who figures to find his way onto the field somehow in 2010. He's a top prospect as both a quarterback and tight end, so he should make a few plays on the ground and through the air in 2010. If Tyrod Taylor gets hurt, Thomas could really go off. His fantasy worth is mostly limited as an insurance pick in ACC-only leagues, however.
