Johnson said Monday that he has committed to Clemson, joining the program as a graduate transfer from Northwestern, Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
A five-star recruit from the 2017 cycle, Johnson began his career at Clemson before opting to move on after two seasons while Trevor Lawrence had a lockdown on the starting quarterback job. He then settled in as Northwestern's top signal-caller to begin the 2019 campaign, but he struggled to solidify his spot atop the depth chart over three seasons with the program, completing 95 of 183 pass attempts for 856 yards and a 5:8 TD:INT while adding a score on the ground. Since he's already earned his undergraduate degree, he'll be eligible to play immediately as a second-time transfer who is returning to Clemson for a sixth season and final year of eligibility. He could get the chance to battle for the starting role in spring and summer camps, though incumbent No. 1 quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei and true freshman Cade Klubnik are likelier candidates to open 2022 under center.

Johnson was the surprise winner of the quarterback battle to begin the 2021 season. Johnson did not attempt a pass in 2020 as he appeared briefly in two games as a backup. He struggled in his lone season as the Northwestern starter in 2019, completing less than 50 percent of his passes with a 1:4 TD:INT in six appearances. Johnson is a former blue-chip recruit that impressed in limited action during his freshman year at Clemson before he transferred to Northwestern. He has a high pedigree and poor track record as a starter, so there's a large range of possible outcomes for his ability to hold the starting job.
