Stepping away from football
Dawkins posted Wednesday on his personal Instagram account that he will take a leave from football to focus on his mental health.
ANALYSIS
Dawkins, who joined Indiana as a graduate transfer in the spring after spending the previous three seasons at Arizona, left the Hoosiers program shortly after it was announced that Peyton Ramsey would open the campaign as the team's starting quarterback. There was some thought that Dawkins might have decided to forgo his scholarship in pursuit of an opportunity elsewhere, but Dawkins' comments in the post suggest he has no intentions of transferring to a different school. Though Dawkins will technically have a year of collegiate eligibility remaining should he resume his playing career, it doesn't sound like he intends to use it.

2018 Fantasy Outlook
Dawkins overtook Anu Solomon for the starting gig during the 2016 campaign after injuries sidelined Solomon for an extended time, but the junior failed to keep the job in 2017 after freshman phenom Khalil Tate proved more worthy of it. With little chance of seeing the field in Tucson during his senior season, Dawkins decided to transfer to Indiana, where he will battle Peyton Ramsey for the starting job in 2018. Dawkins boasts more experience, but Ramsey has already played a year in Kevin Wilson's offense and performed reasonably well while splitting time with Richard Lagow last season. Still, Dawkins is believed to begin fall camp as the favorite to win the starting job, possessing a blend of passing and running abilities that Wilson covets at the position. Even if he wins the job, however, the fifth-year senior will miss out on the production of two of the team's top three pass catchers -- Simmie Cobbs and Ian Thomas -- from a season ago.
