Smith (knee) plans to delay surgery on his torn ACL in an effort to play in San Diego State's upcoming bowl game, Kirk Kinney of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. "He says he's going to try to play in the bowl game. He's going to try to rehab and put it in a brace and see if he can play...then he's going to get operated on after the bowl game. That's his plan right now," said Aztec coach Rocky Long after practice Monday.
ANALYSIS
Smith suffered a torn ACL in Saturday's win over Nevada and will not play in the Mountain West Title Game against Air Force, but the former Kentucky signal caller plans on returning for the Aztecs' bowl game. With the bowl game still some time away, Smith's plans shouldn't necessarily be taken as actual confirmation until further information becomes available.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2013
2012
Smith might take a beating behind the Kentucky offensive line in what's supposed to be a pass-happy spread scheme this year, but he could post some serviceable fantasy numbers at times thanks to the high pass attempt volume. Smith threw eight touchdowns compared to four interceptions last year, so he showed progress in his second season.
Smith competed with Morgan Newton for playing time as a freshman in 2011, but should see the field more in 2012. In about the same amount of time on the field last season, Smith's numbers actually outperformed Newton's. Smith completed 54.9 percent of his passes, threw for 819 yards and four touchdowns. He averaged 5.4 yards per attempt, however, and Kentucky is often overmatched in the SEC, making it an uphill battle for Smith to obtain fantasy relevance.
