Auburn: Tre Mason Declares For The Draft
January 9, 2014
Mason has elected to forgo his senior season to enter the 2014 NFL Draft.
ANALYSIS
Mason burst onto the scene with 1,816 yards and 24 touchdowns in 2013 for the National Championship runner-ups, cementing his place in Tigers lore with a spectacular 46-carry, 304-yard performance in the SEC Championship Game victory over Missouri. He'll now bring his excellent blend of vision and cutting ability to the NFL, where he could be the first back selected on draft day.

2011
Mason had a breakout 2012 season for Auburn, yet it's still safe to say the junior running back was underutilized. Mason is an elusive big-play threat but runs with a compact frame, giving him the ability to serve as both a workhorse and homerun hitter. With four fifths of his offensive line returning and Gus Malzahn taking over Auburn's offense, expect Mason to really go off in 2012. Malzahn oversaw David Oku's 17-touchdown 2010 season, and Mason is way better. Mason posted 1,002 yards and eight touchdowns on just 171 carries last year, and he should easily improve on those numbers with Malzahn calling the shots.
Auburn is playing musical chairs with its running backs now that Michael Dyer is out of the picture for the Tigers. The only Auburn running back that seemingly has a role set in stone is Onterio McCalebb, whose small frame will probably limit him to about eight to 10 carries a game. After McCalebb, Mason will fight Mike Blakely and Jovon Robinson. Robinson and Blakely are both bigger backs than Mason and might be able to take more of a pounding. For now, though, it looks like all four of these running backs will just be negating each other in fantasy terms.
Mason has been named the No. 3 running back behind Onterio McCalebb and Michael Dyer. He will have no fantasy value for the 2011 season.
