Derek Thompson

Thompson was fairly promising in his first year as a starter for North Texas in 2011, finally bringing some quarterback stability to a team that hasn't had it in years. He threw for 11 touchdowns compared to six interceptions and showed decent running skills (113 yards and three touchdowns on the ground), but his upside is nonetheless limited by North Texas' run-heavy offense. It also doesn't help that Thompson averaged only 6.5 yards per pass last year. Thompson could progress in his second year as starter in 2012, but he's only worth monitoring in Sun Belt-only leagues for now.

Thompson is competing for the starting quarterback spot at North Texas, but he might not be able to outdo senior Nathan Tune. Thompson was perfect in very limited action last year, completing all three of his attempts for 60 yards and a touchdown, but it's impossible to know how well he'll do when the stakes are higher. He's an excellent athlete and a threat on the ground as well as through the air, and he's the future of North Texas one way or another. If you draft Nathan Tune, try to get Thompson later on as insurance. Don't consider either one outside of Sun Belt-only leagues.
