Heroics squandered
Couisnard accumulated 32 points (13-33 FG, 6-12 3Pt), eight rebounds, three assists and two blocks over 29 minutes during Saturday's 86-73 2OT loss to Creighton.
ANALYSIS
Couisnard was Oregon's offensive engine, although his diet of jumpers was a factor in the team not attempting a free throw for the first 39 minutes of Saturday's double-overtime classic. Shockingly, Couisnard and N'Faly Dante accounted for all of Oregon's points in the second half -- symbolizing a weak supporting cast as well as the confidence that Couisnard was operating with. The fifth-year used his physicality to get in the lane, was going blow-for-blow on contested threes with Creighton's offense, and had his mid-range jumper rocking until he started running out of gas down the stretch. He had a chance to win the game at the end of regulation, but his driving runner bounced off the back of the rim. It's a crushing ending to an all-time performance through the tournament's first weekend of games, as Couisnard compiled 72 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists while committing just two turnovers and raining in 11 of his 21 three-point attempts. At 6-foot-4 with a historically middling track record as a three-point shooter, Couisnard's next-level projection is difficult, but he will likely have a range of opportunities given his strength, scoring instincts and two-way fire. His finishes the 2023-24 campaign with career-best marks across the board, including his 40.0 percent shooting, 16.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.6 steals per game.
