The "Beat Chris Liss" NFFC Draft - Don't Try This at Home

So this is one of those drafts that flowed poorly for me, and some of that was my own doing. Let's start with the set-up: It's a 12-team mostly standard PPR with 3-WR, 1-FLEX, but six-points per passing TD. It's also third-round reversal which means the teams at the end of the first round pick early in the second and third, and late in the fourth.

You get to set your draft preferences beforehand, and I had a hard time figuring out where I wanted to pick. (Full disclosure: I had just returned from vacation in Mexico the day before it was due and didn't take enough time to think it through.) I made No. 9 my first choice because I figured I'd get a top-WR (Dez Bryant probably) in the first round and then an early pick in the second and third. But once I started looking deeper, I realized the drop-off was in the mid-fourth, and I would have been better off going late-third/early fourth rather than the opposite.

But the slot was locked in, and it was too late to turn back. Besides, someone has to pick ninth.

Here's how it unfolded:

Round 1: Picks 1-5 were the big-four RBs and Calvin Johnson. Pick 6 was Bryant. I was hoping the next two would be Lacy and Graham, and I could land Demaryius Thomas, but he went No. 7, and Graham went No. 8. So I was faced with either Lacy or Julio Jones (I don't love A.J. Green's setup this year). I took Lacy, thinking there was a 10-15 percent chance Jones might slip to me the next round. No dice.

Round 2: I was hoping for Jordy Nelson, but he was gone. My top WR tier had been cleaned out, and I wasn't going to dip to Tier 2 with Alshon Jeffery at 2.4. So I went with the top RB on the board: DeMarco Murray. Going RB/RB was not how I wanted to start, but it's what fell to me.

Round 3: My initial thought was thankfully someone took Montee Ball a couple picks before me, or I would have had a tough decision. The big-three QBs were gone, too. So it was Arian Foster even though I had two RBs already or a receiver. Or Rob Gronkowski (Julius Thomas was gone at this point). I liked a lot of the WR, but I hoped one of my top choices would come back to me, even though I knew from ADP and mock drafting it wasn't likely. But I couldn't bring myself to take one of six or seven I liked equally, so it was Foster or Gronk, both of whom stood out at their respective positions. I went Gronk, (For this Andy Behrens killed me on Twitter declaring me past my prime. Permanently.  Strangely, Mike Salfino of all people rushed to my defense. (Not since Colin Ferguson - the LIRR gunman, not the talk show host - has one's representation so thoroughly assured a guilty verdict. I wish I knew how to embed an entire Twitter conversation.) In the end, Gronk coming off the recent ACL was probably a reach, but I don't think he would have been there on the way back, and in any event, I can't un-ring that bell.

Round 4: As I had feared, all the players I really wanted were gone, as Cordarrelle Patterson, who I only kind of wanted, went one pick before me. So I thought about it for too long (there's an inverse correlation between the time it takes to pick and its quality) and took Percy Harvin. I needed a WR, and he's probably going to earn that if he's healthy, given his 150 rushing yards and a TD and a kick return TD tacked on to his pass-catching stats. I'm sure it'll be a joy to set my lineup every week with him listed as questionable for the late games, though.

Round 5: Of course, I took Josh Gordon. There's a chance he'd have been there late round six, 18 picks later, but this is a contest with a $100 K grand prize, so there's a premium on upside. Plus, I don't love the RBs in that area.

Round 6: Bishop Sankey: With that pick, I'm playing chess, while these guys are playing checkers.

Round 7: Nick Foles - My No. 4 QB, and a fairly easily call.

Other than the Gronk pick, I'm making the best of it.

Then disaster.

Round 8: I was set to take Jordan Matthews, but for some reason it felt early. I thought: "no need to take him now because I can get him a round later." Who's a solid guy who I can put in my lineup rather than hope a rookie pans out? Riley Cooper. They gave him a big contract, and Jeremy Maclin - who I like - is injury prone. Cooper is big and fast and this is his second year in the system, getting regular action. But I never felt comfortable with that pick, and sure enough Matthews went three picks later.

Round 9: I was set to take Terrance West for more upside, but he went one pick before me, so I settled for Aaron Dobson. I like Dobson's upside, but when your No. 2 is Riley Cooper, pending Gordon's appeal, you'd ideally like someone guaranteed more playing time.

Round 10: At this point, I was determined not to wait on anyone and just grab my guys. I took Marqise Lee probably three rounds too early just to make sure.

Round 11: I was able to nab Charles Clay as Gronk insurance and for possible use at the flex.

Round 12: I don't love Kelvin Benjamin, but if Gordon is suspended, and Dobson doesn't win a starting job, he could be in my Week 1 lineup. Remember, this is a 12, not a 16-team league.

Round 13: Ahmad Bradshaw - I actually like this pick. Trent Richardson is guaranteed nothing, and Bradshaw looks healthy in camp.

Round 14: C.J. Anderson - why not? Montee Ball is out, and Ronnie Hillman's never taken advantage of his chances. Why is Anderson still on the roster even if the Broncos don't think somewhat highly of him?

Round 15: Johnny Manziel. I love Foles, but should Gordon be reinstated, Manziel has plenty of upside.

Round 16: Odell Beckham. The Giants offense will feature a lot of short throws, and he's got a good chance to be one of the three wideouts on the field most of the time.

Round 17: Robert Turbin. Marshawn Lynch has had a big workload including the playoffs. Maybe Christine Michael is the backup, but it's just as likely Turbin would get the first crack if Lynch went down.

Round 18: Bills D

Round 19: Jets D - home vs. Oakland Week 1.

Round 20: Matt Bryant.

Overall, I give this draft a C. I was boxed into RB-RB, though had I known Jordy Nelson wouldn't come back to me, I would have taken Julio Jones at No. 9 overall. And I either should have loaded up at RB with Foster in Round 3 or taken a WR like Keenan Allen or Victor Cruz over Gronkowski. Of course, if Gronkowski is somehow himself, I'll be happy I didn't.

That doesn't mean I can't still win. My top two RBs should see a lot of work, and Gronk and Gordon are first-round picks if healthy and eligible to play. But it would have been better to have drafted earlier and nabbed Michael Floyd at 4.2 or C.J. Spiller at 4.6 than Harvin at 4.9.
