The biggest news from today's training camp comes from Seahawks camp and the injury status of rookie Rashaad Penny, so that's where we'll start as we take a look at the analysis of today's news.
• Great news from Adam Schefter of ESPN, as he reported that Rashaad Penny's expected to be back at full strength from his broken finger before the Seahawks battle the Broncos in Week 1 of the regular season. However, the missed practice time could make it difficult for the rookie to push teammate Chris Carson for early-down work to start the campaign. He'll also potentially have added competition for passing down work if C.J. Prosise and J.D. McKissic can stay healthy and are productive for the remainder of the preseason. Overall, this news makes it possible that Penny grows into his role as the regular season starts. He's a bit more risky as a fantasy draft choice than he was a couple days ago, but there's still a possibility he's the team's starter from day one.
• Although he did participate, Kelvin Benjamin took limited snaps and had an ice pack on his knee during Wednesday's practice. For a player who's dealt with knee issues, including January surgery to repair a torn meniscus he suffered last season, it's a cause for concern despite the injury appearing to be minor. This is definitely a situation to monitor throughout the preseason, and if he starts to miss practices, it might be wise to lower him on draft boards.
• While the 49ers backfield's been beset by injuries, Alfred Morris is now on the fantasy radar. That said, his contract is for the veteran's minimum, making it likely that he'll be in a battle for a roster spot. With the expectation being that both Jerick McKinnon (calf) and Matt Breida (shoulder) will be ready for the regular season, Morris isn't a player who's likely to have a major role, making him little more than a lottery ticket pick in fantasy drafts.
• Even though Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer is unsure as to whether Dalvin Cook (knee) will play in this week's preseason contest, Andrew Krammer of the Minneapolis Star is reporting that even if Cook doesn't play in the preseason, he'll be ready to roll in Week 1. All along, the Vikings have had a management plan in place to ensure their star RB will be ready for the regular season. Playing on a team that'll likely have their share of leads to grind out, as well as an explosive offense to keep him from seeing stacked boxes, Cook could return first-round value despite being selected in the second round of many drafts.
• Over in Baltimore, the rave reviews about John Brown continue, as he's consistently made big plays throughout camp. The better news is that there hasn't been any chatter about his health, making it appear as if he's improved dramatically from the sickle-cell trait that ruined much of his 2017 season. In addition, Joe Flacco's having a strong camp, and one thing he's always been able to do is throw a great deep ball, so Brown's looking like a great player to target late in drafts as an upside option.
• With the depth chart at WR seemingly wide open behind Larry Fitzgerald in Arizona, Brice Butler may miss out on an opportunity to stake his claim to a starting spot as he's unlikely to play in this week's preseason game with a foot injury. Hopefully, he'll get back on the field quickly, as he showed some big-play potential with the Cowboys last year, and if he can earn a starting spot, he could be player to watch on the waiver wire once the regular season begins.
• Not that he's been drafted on many fantasy squads, but Broncos' WR Carlos Henderson has been suspended for Week 1 for violating the league's substance-abuse policy. With an improving WR depth chart in Denver, he may find himself on the roster bubble as he tries to earn a spot on the team.
That'll do it for today, and don't forget that more preseason games kick off Thursday.
