Trent Richardson is going to have arthroscopic surgery on his left knee – Richardson is schedule to meet with Dr. James Andrews on Thursday and expected to have a procedure done that is being billed as a minor scope to remove a "hang nail particle" that is not attached to the meniscus he had repaired in February. The thing to watch for is obviously how quickly he can bounce back and resume play. Perhaps it sounds optimistic, but at this point the expectation is that he'll be ready for the season opener on September 9 versus Philadelphia. Without a preseason to gauge how good he can be at the pro level and with the injury flag attached to him though, expect Richardson's ADP to fall a fair amount over the remainder of August. If for any reason Richardson's recovery timetable changes and could threaten the early part of the season, look for Montario Hardesty's stock to conversely rise.
Adrian Peterson (knee) could resume practice as early as Sunday – Coach Leslie Frazier is supporting his star player in his attempt—no matter how much of a long shot it may be—to return by Week 1 of the regular season. But even if Peterson, who is on track for that date per his coach, does begin practicing with his teammates on Sunday, it may yet be weeks before he can go fully through contact drills. The plus side to look at though is that there appears to be very little chance Peterson will be placed on the PUP list to begin the year.
Terrell Owens practiced with the Seahawks for the first time – And Owens reportedly continued to impress with his hands and superb athleticism. Though he's over-the-hill in football years, Owens is a physical specimen and could well be an exception to the rule. Assuming he makes it through camp without any issues, the Seahawks will have a hard time keeping him off the field, and with Sidney Rice's questionable health, Owens might be a strong bet to lead the team in receiving.
Kevin Smith left practice with a strained quadriceps muscle – No indication has been made as to the severity of the injury, but with Mikel Leshoure (hamstring) and Jahvid Best (concussion) unable to practice and without any timetable to return, this is the last thing the Lions need. Smith was looking good in camp thus far and a lock to be the team's No. 1 back for at least the first two weeks while Leshoure serves a league-imposed suspension, but if he's slowed by this injury Detroit may be forced to bring in a veteran like Ryan Grant or Cedric Benson to add depth to their backfield and headaches to fantasy owners. And for a back like Smith who has been an injury magnet throughout his career, this one little hiccup—if it is indeed little—may be more than enough to scare off the weary owners he was just starting to win over.
Santonio Holmes (ribs) is officially out for the Jets' first preseason game – Keeping Holmes out appears to be mostly a precaution, as the injury is not viewed as being too serious. In his absence, Stephen Hill, who is currently listed as the team's No. 2 receiver, should have plenty of opportunities to lockdown that role with a good performance.
Denarius Moore (hamstring) missed practice again on Wednesday – Since it's still early in the preseason, the Raiders are taking a cautious stance with one of their top playmakers. Nevertheless, this is Moore's first full offseason and first with Carson Palmer. In getting the extra rest, he's missing valuable time to improve his understanding of the offense, work on his fundamentals as a wideout and increase the chemistry between he and his quarterback. Keep an eye on this situation as preseason games get underway. If Moore is being held out of games, it could be an indication of a more serious injury and his stock as a popular breakout candidate could take a major hit.
Keshawn Martin appears to have a firm grip on the No. 3 receiver spot in Houston – In recent practices Martin has begun separating himself from a pack of competitors that includes fellow rookie DeVier Posey and second-year man Lestar Jean in the team's battle for the No. 3 receiver role. Martin is impressing coaches with his ability to separate from coverage and use his quickness to make plays after the catch. If he turns in a good performance in the Texans' first preseason game on Saturday against the Panthers—a game in which he's expected to log heavy minutes—he may not relinquish the third wideout spot anytime soon. Given the injury histories of Andre Johnson and Kevin Walter, that could make Martin a worthwhile grab as a late-round flier.
Steve Smith sat out practice with a bruised knee – As a precautionary measure, the Panthers rested Smith after he bruised his knee in Tuesday's practice. By all indications the situation is minor and shouldn't have any lingering effects on Smith.
