At 12:01 AM the first morning free agency signings were permitted, a contingency of Miami Marlins personnel greeted Jose Reyes in a New York Hotel. The owner entered the hotel with a top coat covering a brand new Marlins jersey. It had Reyes' name and number on the back. The hotel discussions and fashion show ended this week with Reyes becoming the new Marlins SS and a major part of the Marlins family.
Reyes met the press at the Baseball Winter Meetings sporting that bright white new #7 Marlins uniform, a wonderful smile and a very appreciate attitude about becoming a Florida Marlin. Reyes seemed very comfortable and at ease. He should be. He has the security of a 6 year contract with a club option. He indicated the New York Mets did not make an offer to retain him.
Reyes indicated he chose Miami (no other teams or contract options were mentioned in the news conference) because he loves the city, it's close to his home in the Dominican, the team has a new stadium and he wants the chance to win. he indicated that he is looking forward to playing with Hanley Ramirez.
Reyes made a point of thanking the Mets for giving him the opportunity to play Major League Baseball. He also made the point that he's happy to be remaining in the National League East among teams and players he knows. And of course, he'll be playing against the Mets.
Marlins personnel began the press conference indicating that Hanley Ramirez was contacted by phone 30 seconds after Reyes agreed to his contract. Plans are for Ramirez to play 3B, giving the Marlins an outstanding left side of the infield. There are conflicting reports about Ramirez response to being asked to move to 3B. Time will tell.
When asked about his health, Reyes indicated he is physically healthy and that he will continue to give 100|PERCENT| effort on the field.
He also indicated that the weather in Miami may be physically helpful to him.
Reyes is looking forward to getting to Spring Training and meeting his new teammates. He's excited. He's motivated. And of course, he's very secure financially with a mega deal signed and sealed. So he's signed, he's sealed. Now it's up to Reyes to deliver.
