-Has any team improved their lineup this offseason more than the Baltimore Orioles? Let's look at their Opening Day lineup against the Rays last year and then what it could be this year:
Last Year: This Year:
Brian Roberts Brian Roberts
Adam Jones Adam Jones
Nick Markakis Nick Markakis
Miguel Tejada Mark Reynolds
Luke Scott Luke Scott
Matt Wieters Matt Wieters
Felix Pie Vladimir Guerrero
Garrett Atkins Derrek Lee
Cesar Izturis J.J. Hardy
Slight offensive upgrade, no? If some of the young arms past Brian Matusz realize their potential, you're minimally looking at third place in the AL East.
-Check out my upcoming team preview on the Rays. I'm not optimistic on them this season as they don't have a player on their roster who hit over 22 home runs last year. Use that as a baseline and check out the rest of the AL East. Yes, the starting pitching is there but I'm worried about the offense.
-Great knockout by Anderson "The Spider" Silva Saturday night. A devastating kick to Vitor Belfort's head ended the match and afterwards, guess who got some credit? Lawman, recording artist and distinguished thespian, Steven Seagal. Look for a Silva/Georges St. Pierre fight this summer is GSP can get past Jake Shields.
-Who says soccer is boring? There were 41 goals scored in the EPL Saturday with eight games in action. Is it a surprise that Fulham salvaged a point to tie Aston Villa 2-2 on a late Clint Dempsey goal?
-Ok, onto the big game. First, nice job with the Anthem Christina; Whitney Houston (greatest ever) didn't forget the lyrics. Is it me or were the commercials actually decent for the first time in a long while? Usually we're sitting here Monday morning and complaining how bad they were. Out of all the new movies they had previews for over the weekend, I'm most excited to check out the blockbuster that is "Winter's Bone."
-Really, let's discuss the game. I never thought I'd say this but did anyone else think the Packers won the coaching battle? I'd give credit to Dom Capers above all else as it seemed the defense had a great game plan. Go back and watch how many times Raji or the defensive line rushed up the middle. It was hardly at all, after all the talk from earlier in the week. Instead it seemed like they dropped more into coverage and that helped create turnovers. On offense I'm going to credit Aaron Rodgers for their success. I don't think it was random that Jordy Nelson was targeted so much. Rodgers knew they'd roll coverage to Greg Jennings side and Nelson would have man-on-man all day long. I respect him as a player but I think Donald Driver is headed into the sunset. The MVP was an easy call given all the drops Jordy had and the very few bad throws Rodgers had.
-Speaking of giving the ball up, it's Captain Obvious checking in but the turnover battle cost Pittsburgh. I'm not sure if they're a really good or really bad Super Bowl team. Has there ever been a team who has played three horrible halves and still had a chance to win the Super Bowl? Adding up the bad three halves over the last three games they've been outscored 58-17. Yet, they still had a chance to win yesterday.
-Charles Woodson broke his collarbone which from what I know is extremely painful. Fun fact: it's the most broken bone in the human body.
-I'm starting to think James Jones doesn't have good hands, although he wasn't the only Packer who had the dropsies yesterday.
-I'm totally convinced Troy Polamalu isn't healthy. Would you say he was even 70 percent of his normal self these playoffs?
-Who looks better with a Championship belt, Aaron Rodgers or Hulk Hogan? My juvenile pick is the latter.
-Nice to see Mike Wallace show up yesterday. If the NFL was smart, they'd add contests like the 100-meter dash and weightlifting (bench-press, squat) to the Pro Bowl weekend.
-Dom Capers will be a head coach next year, right? Remember his success as a head coach was put on Davis Carr's shoulders (and a bad O-line) and we all know how he turned out.
-That'll be all for me and this column until next season. Be sure to check out my Barometer column during baseball and any other random rantings I have for the blog.
