As I wrote in today's NBA Working the Wire column, the Nets have been eager to make a trade. Their first may come as soon as tomorrow. Al Iannazzone of NorthJersey.com is reporting New Jersey will deal Terrence Williams to a Western Conference team in the next day or so.

This is not the much-anticipated Carmelo Anthony deal, though it could be a first step in that direction. On the other hand, ESPN's Chris Sheridan is reporting -- very emphatically, I might add -- that Anthony will not sign a contract extension with any team but the Knicks. (Anthony has denied making any such claim.)

I've been high on Williams all season, but it was pretty clear he wasn't going to get a chance to show his stuff in New Jersey; he and Nets coach Avery Johnson get along about as well as North and South Korea. Williams has already been suspended by the team -- reportedly for being late -- and sent to the D-League in recent weeks. But let's not forget -- he absolutely tore up D-League competition during his stint with the Springfield Armor.

I think there's enough "he just needs a change of scenery" potential here to put in a waiver claim even before we learn where Williams is headed -- just on the chance that he lands with a team where he'll play a significant role.

Update: Yahoo! Sports is reporting that the Rockets will get Williams from the Nets. Los Angeles gets Joe Smith from the Nets, and New Jersey gets the Lakers' 2011 draft pick and Sasha Vujacic.

The deal eliminates about $4 million from the Lakers' payroll. The Nets now own five first-round draft picks in the 2011 and 2012 drafts (theirs, the Warriors' and the Lakers in 2011, theirs and Houston's in 2012), which puts them in excellent shape to make another deal.

My guess is the Rockets are planning additional trades as well; I don't see where Williams fits on a roster that already has Kevin Martin and Courtney Lee and Shane Battier and Chase Budinger at the two/three position.
