The Chris Snyder trade has been finalized, and the Rays have acquired Chad Qualls. Not exactly needle-moving stuff, but it's something. Let's see what happens in the non-Diamondback division of the game today.
I actually like the acquisition of Snyder by the Pirates. Sadly, I think it's an admission that Ryan Doumit can no longer catch, due to concussion issues. I wouldn't be surprised if he's out for a significant period of time this year, and when he comes back, he's moved out of the position.
The D-Backs got players and not cash in this deal, getting D.J. Carrasco, Ryan Church and Bobby Crosby. None are especially young - I'm not sure what they hope to accomplish with this deal. Church, if he plays in left field, could be valuable.
Meanwhile, Qualls is a pure salary dump - a Player to Be Named Later - and a pretty low-price gamble by the Rays that they can resuscitate his value. He'll pitch in low-leverage situations.
